uploadfromtaptalk1431930869016.jpgHi folks,

Long time lurker looking to get an idea of how much my dear "Wang" is worth these days. Wang is my daily driver and my hunting rig. He had served me loyally without a single issue but I have a baby coming and need to adjust the stable accordingly.

Wang:
1985 4runner with around 225k, fading red paint but no rust, interior in good shape. Motor is impeccably reliable and strong.
22re with about 90k
Serviced religiously with amsoil, then changed to Schaffers.
Has T100 transfer case and tranny.
OME lift
ARB rear locker.
New carpet.
New front driveline
Both axels have been rebuilt in the last three years.
Has headers that work great with
minimal drone.
33" maxxis all around
Optima battery.
CB radio with fire stick.
Safari rack in top.
Custom front bumper

I'm interested to see what people think it's worth too... I see a handful of nearly stock 1st gen's on craigslist in the $5k range here in FL, but not alot of nicely modified ones for comparison.

Hmmm...that's a tough one because it's so heavily modified. There are mods that are obviously worth a lot to you (or to some potential purchaser) but would not be worth it to others. I think the problem with selling modded vehicles is that your "pool" of potential customers is much, much smaller than what would exist for an unmodified vehicle. OTOH, the right customer would be willing to pay what a casual buyer might not.
.
So unfortunately, I doubt that anyone here could offer you anything but a WAG. Since that's the case, if I was in your shoes I'd probably come up with an upper limit, a max of what YOU think it's worth, and then an absolute minimum, the amount that, if you couldn't get that, you'd just keep it. Then, I'd put it on CL or some other listing site for your 10 - 20% above your upper price and see what happens. If you get zero responses, then drop your price.
.
My experience selling our little Teardrop trailer was an eye opener. I had thought we'd be lucky to get $3k for her. But my wife insisted on listing her for almost $5k and we ended up getting $4400. My point is, don't devalue your item too much, especially if it's one-of-a-kind. It's always easier to drop a price than it is to raise one, so start high and if nothing happens, adjust accordingly. Hopefully you've got enough time before the baby comes that you won't be in a rush to sell.

In CO without a Marlin and all the rock jock BS it's not worth as much.

I routinely see built Toy's @ $5000

Yeah, my plan was to start at $6k, agreeing with Martinjmpr in that I can always come down. I live in a small community, though, so it's hard to market these rigs. Boise is around three hours away but then again, I had someone fly from Spokane to buy an 88 Suburban once.

I'm really torn as to selling Wang. I was explaining to my buddy the other day that the difference between Wang and all the other project vehicles I've ever owned is that a) Wang is actually super reliable and b) he actually gets pretty damned good MPG. Oh, and you can take the top off which is nice!

Once I get after it, I'll list it at $6K and report back with whatever happens.

@bkg--I don't honestly know. PO was a mechanic for Team Maxis (rock crawlers) and was raving about the setup...it's beefier than stock?

Apples to oranges but a '85 Toyota truck down street with a freshly rebuilt 22R, mild lift, and 33s is for sale asking $4,500.

i'm gonna go out on a limb here...

i think that the t100 5-speed is an r150f trans, which has the stronger 23-spline input shaft to the transfer case(?) http://www.davezoffroadperformance....transfer-case/parts/input-gear-23-spline.html

however, the t100 came with a chain-driven transfer case from the factory(?), which is of course inferior to the gear-driven transfer case that came on the 4runner.

my wild guess here is that it has a gear-driven transfer case bolted to the r150f, which is then mated to the 22re with a special bellhousing that only came on the turbo'd first gen pickups... those bellhousings are rare, $200+ if you can even find one... the turbo'd 4runners were all supposed to have had only automatic transmissions.

however, the first-gen turbo'd pickups came with an r151f, and i don't know how that compares to the r150f that came in the t100.

you should be able to tell which transfer case it has by looking at the bolt pattern in back, and the special bellhousing has a drain hole in the bottom of it, if i remember correctly... better get your ducks in a row here, if you want to get the full amount that the truck is worth when you sell it.

if it was me, i'd take out a loan on a credit card before i'd let that truck go :) you will regret losing it later.

Osv basically got it... At least for the v6 t100's. 4cyl, I think, came with w59 and chain tcase.

If its an r150, it would also need a different center console out of a v6 4runner as the 150s shifter is slightly forward of a w56. Great trans, if that's what it is.

If there is an adapter between trans and tcase... Or even some custom mounting work at the crossmember, its possible... But I'm still confused. If the PO had access to a 151 bellhousing.. Why not use the 151??

Can we get pics? Curiosity is killing me!

Looks taller than just an OME lift. Stock gearing?
Martinjmpr gives great advice. I think your idea of $6K is reasonable, though I would be one of the guys falling out of the potential buyer pool due to the mods.

Instead of selling, why not trade it straight up for a newer model 4runner that is slightly modded and capable of hauling your family?

Truck looks pretty damn good. I'd be comfortable paying 5k for it.

One other thing, since your in a small town, put it on Ebay and CL in bigger cities that are close to you and get a feel for the price that way.

I will take a look underneath but you're partially correct for sure--it's got a custom milled plate for the shifter indicating a different transmission position than stock.

I'll also look at the transfer case number and get back to you.

Well, after a lot of "soul searching," I have decided NOT to sell Wang. I love it too much and it has served me very, very well. The motivation was not financial--it was more practicality oriented as the better half isn't super psyched on the baby riding in that rig.

That said, I have decided to keep Wang and address the only downside I know of--the lack of power. I am investigating some rebuilt motors (22re Performance, etc.) as compression on my number four is lower (don't have the number off hand) and the motor may be tired, though hard to tell... It doesn't drip a drop and has no obvious issues. To be honest, I really don't know how much difference a fresh 22re would make. Wang basically gets up to 55 or 60 on flat land (we live at altitude which probably doesn't help), so getting him a new ticker would probably help quite a bit. I like the idea of putting the V6 conversion in there but I don't have the time with the baby coming so I'm looking for something more plug and play. I also can't contact the PO and don't know the gearing so I think I'll pop the differential and see what's in there. I can't imagine it's stock after all the work he did on it but you never know.

I need this rig to run vaguely well on highways. I use it a ton for hunting and put a lot of highway miles on it accordingly, so that's the goal, as opposed to gearing it for crawling, etc.

Thanks for all of the input--kind of reminded me how special he is.

how much oil is it using per thousand miles? a quart or less, i'd just drive it... have the valves been adjusted recently?

we all have to suffer with these 22re motors :-( where they really suck is going up hills.

no need to pop the diff, you can mark the driveshaft and a wheel, and compare the revolutions of each, then extrapolate that against the tire size, to see if the gears are right for the tire size.

for instance, my 5.29 gears should mean just over five revolutions of the driveshaft for every full turn of the wheel.

but since i run a true 37" tire to compensate for the gearing, everything is exactly the same as stock.
