Problem with A/C Vents

Has anyone had a problem with the A/C where the cold air blows from the top vent on the dash but not through any of the front vents? I can't figure out what the heck is going on with my A/C vents and why they aren't blowing out cold air when the A/C is on. I've checked to see if they are obstructed in any way and I can't tell that they are. If you have any suggestions, please post them up. Thanks!

I am suffering from the same problem in my '03 TJ. Sometimes it is very slow to switch...other times it won't switch at all. I haven't looked into it though....maybe this winter when it cools off....:xxrotflma

Okay, I think I may have found the answer. It could be a vacuum leak and I found a diagram showing how to check the lines. Goodtimes, if you're having the same problem, you may want to check the vacuum lines leading into the cab from the firewall.

I find leaves and pieces of duct tape sometimes make their way through the cold air vent, noisily through the fan and get stuck in the flappers that control the temperature and vent direction. Wiggling the control levers usually helps. Sometimes I just have to wait until whatever it was escapes through the vents.

Wait, you have air conditioning?

my 06 LJ did this when it was a few months old. was taking a few minutes every morning to switch from defrost (default vent position) to the dash vents. then it got to the point where it wouldn't switch over at all or take 10 plus minutes to switch. rather than take it to the dealer for warranty and have to put up with the possibility of poor service I did the troubleshooting myself. if it wasn't a vacuum leak I was gonna take it in, no sense in paying for parts if I don't need to. my problem was a leaking vacuum line underneath the battery box. I cut the bad spot out, went to the parts store and bought some vacuum line that fit over the factory plastic line and spliced it back together, been working fine ever since.

Ha! Yes, yes I know. I actually do have some modern conveniences in my TJ though I should probably be ashamed to say so, eh? ;)

Thinking about it some more, a colleague of mine had exactly the same problem a while back. Apparently Jeep made several changes to the vacuum control mechanism over the years so they're not all the same. I think my colleague said his Jeep has an electrical vent direction switch that controls the vacuum mechanism in the engine bay. He simply found one of the electrical connectors had disconnected itself from the vacuum mechanism.

Good luck!

So what next after AC? Central locking? Power windows? Self bailing floor drains? Bose noise canceling speakers?

Cheers,
Graham
