First the Name, KUMA means bear in japanese, and was the name of last dog. He was a black lab / golden retriever mix that I got for my 14th birthday. He passed this last december do something the doctors couldn't explain but he was truely a best friend! This is him... I named the vehicle after him long before he passed as I used the nickname for video games when playing with friends and all my friends knew my dog really well and sometimes would even come over just to play with him I am serious! So it was natural that KUMA be the name.

Second the Vehicle Information, my project starts with a 2000 Nissan Xterra in blue. I wanted yellow but sometimes it's just really hard to find a vehicle exactly the way you want! I bought the truck from some punk little kid who had far too much money and didn't care for it because he thought it was girls car... He had 3 vehicles while owning this and probably only washed it once he didn't even clean it out and I found a still sealed condom in the glove box the night I bought it. But it was in great condition and I knew I could make it even better!

IMG_6215.jpg

Reason I chose to purchase this vehicle was do to my friend owning a brand new 2002 S/C in high school that he thrashed and didn't care about but every single girl seemed to love it and wanted it. I guess it is a ladies vehicle but once modified they just want to ride in it! That is partly how I got my girlfriend I am serious about that as well! She drove it without a license and even ran a red light before we were dating. But I knew the X has everything I want even had the Limited Slip Diff and was fully equiped SE model w/ sunroof.

My family is very much into the desert exploring and expeditions. Since I was 14 we have gone every single weekend even in winter on our motorcycle out to the desert to explore. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and as many of you know we have lot's of desert and mountains. In less then an hour I can be a flat warm desert or in a cool high forest mountains. On our motorcycles we had everything equiped and set just right! I owned a Suzuki DR350 (Mod's were bored out 410cc, 5 Gallon clear Desert Tank, Yoshimura Exhaust, custom Aluminum Air box with K&N filter, GPS, Heated hand grips, and Heated vest connection) we would usually start our day at 9 am and end at about 10 pm with about an hour and half drive back home to still go. Our typical day was planning a route and usually getting about 250+ miles. We have explored everything from Grouse Creek in northern west corner down to Delta in middle of West utah. And even then some. After my dad took a fall on his BMW 650 GS and broke his wrist and we had to wait 2 hours for a sheriff to pick us up and take us an hour away to Nephi even though we could see Delta in the distant but were across county lines my dad decided no more with the motorcycles. Within a week of breaking his wrist there was a brand new Yellow 2007 Wrangler JK in my front drive way and less then a month later my Xterra.

Next time I post I will post up pic's of each of mod's and some trip pictures. But here is a few for your viewing pleasure!

Haha well you can see I have been registered since April I just haven't posted anything lol. I like this forum though lots of great expedition and overland stuff! Fits my style :) I have been following the sweet xterra build on here!

I miss kuma sometimes and it is hard when you lose a part of the family. I always wanted to take a week off and just rogue me and kuma and go explore Utah for a full week. Unfortunately I never got to it before he died, so this summer was dedicated to getting out and enjoying four wheeling. And I think I did a pretty good job ;)

Hey Dave! I hope we can I really need to get out and get some good use of the X before the snow hits. However I am thinking about setting up a meet and greet and also maybe a nice little winter desert run for a new club/organization I am forming called United Echo. I already have the site www.United-Echo.com and logo ready to start making stickers.

And I am really hoping to use this not as yet another forum for everyone to hang out on but more of something that maybe helps gets people together, I am hoping to work with all the clubs around and it's for all vehicles not just offroaders as a single though thats where it may start. Let me know dave if your interested in the meet in greet!

Me and Carmen are thinking of getting a fall/winter meet and greet together at Murray Park and get all the vehicles together and just kind of see everything that people have modified on their car's or trucks. I will explain later what it's about!

Some more pictures for you guys! :D

One of the first things that ended up happening to the X was of course losing the side steps. I ran Lake Forest trail about 3 times stock and on the 3rd time I finally hit a rock and shoved my side step into my tire.
IMG_6867.jpg

Ended up taking off the side step and drove down the trail with it bungee'd to the roof!
IMG_6871.jpg

I know a few people on here have done Lake Forest trail and you will know it can be done stock but it's getting more and more difficult in the last year the winter and water erosion have really brought the rocks to the surface! Now whenever I got up it I scrape my wheels and almost always hit my sliders. But still one of my favorite trails and I hope to help with the next restoration they do in the area.

So my first mod's began shortly after and as I stated Desert is what my family does! A typical day is usually around 200 miles in our trucks and we set a specific area or mountain range to explore! Here is some pics of a day when we went to find my brothers Trilobyte geocache had found and hid for us.

Lights are IPF 900 XS which I am especially happy with! I have the driving version and I must say the spread and distance throwing is incredible compared to any lights I have ever seen! You really get your moneys worth! Tires are 31" ******** Cepek Mountain Cat M/T's I have had them now roughly around 2 years and they are incredible for being a Range C! Never had a puncture.
IMG_7566.jpg

Lately I actually got a crack in one of my lens and now its all fogged, I have clear packaging table holding it as the crack seems to be spreading with the cold coming, I need to find out if ARB/IPF will sale an individual lense replacement if anyone know please say so! Or if you know where to find one!

IMG_7669.jpg

A nice little story for everyone... This day my brother met us on his DRZ which had a flat, we didn't have any repair kits and were ready to get home so we setup a kind of pitstop run, my dad with his Warn winch w/ air compressor would pull up right behind my brother, I would usually keep up with the bike since my truck is lighter and seems to take the desert roads fast (but safely) I would hop out hook up the hose and my brother would plug it in, as soon as the tire was filled he would hurry and speed off to keep the tire warm and get up to highest gear. It would last about 8 to 12 miles before needing a refill. I kept the hose in my truck and my dad had the air compress controls tied to his front bumper making it as quick as possible. Believe it or not if I remember right these pictures were taken in February you can imagine how cold it gets at night so we had to get back quick!

IMG_7693.jpg

Now for the good part of the story, sorta! We run into a Surburan with a family has about 6 or 7 kids with them (some were their kids friends) the couple had 1 blow out, 2 flats and 1 spare that was also flat. 2 of the flats had patches that were barely holding, the rangers in Fish Springs had patched for them. Another chevy truck pulled over and offered there spare which sadly didnt fit because the wheel size. We ended up trying to do what we were doing with my brothers bike again but now with them, so we pumped up the tires and said "go ahead your about 20 miles to the pass and about another 5 to get to the freeway". The guy litterally peels out spraying us with rocks, just from looking at it. He was NOT prepared to be out in the desert and they would have surely had to have had a search and rescue party if we didn't meet them nor if the other truck had.

Anyways we meet them 20 miles down the road at the beginning of the pass where once again a not so worthy tire had failed, now we had the only good tire leaking air from the bead. All the other tires flat and a NEW blow out! The chevy guy there to help, comes up with a genius idea and had made the decision to put his spare that didn't fit on backwards, which would maybe suffice until reaching the main road. We once again pumped the tires and sent them off and this time got a face full of dust, once we had reached the road we turned off at faust and headed home through Lehi. In the distance going north we saw them going to tooele once again on the side of the road and I imagine this time with the spare some how ruined... We figured they can probably call a tow truck from here.

Lesson of the story, if your going to the desert take warm clothes, good tires, an air compress, patches and know what you are doing! I can tell you now after this experience me and my dad finally started loading our trucks for full adventures with everything imaginable! Which later will bring me to my next mod, my truck storage box! And emergency kit! But to be continued later!
