Project Mac and Cheese

Hello everyone. This is my first build log on here, and it might take a while to get it all uploaded. It was started about 3 years ago, and has been used a few times over the last two years. My goal is to get lots more done soon so that I can get lots of use from it this summer.

Here is what it looked like the day I brought it home.

My wife says mac and cheese is a gross colour or orange, and she thought this looked the same, so that's where the name came from. After searching for years for a decent m416 that was close enough to drag home, I ended up stumbling onto this thing. $400CAD got it coming home with me.

It was a construction generator and light tower in a previous life. It has a 3500# axle and was rated at just over 3000# fully loaded with a full tank of gas. I got it as just the empty trailer frame with no engine or light mast.

I started to strip it all down, as there was lots of rust and peeling paint. The frame is 2x3" 0.25 wall rectangular tubing. It had an epoxy primer with a really thick rubber coating over it. Parts were peeling, but my sandblasted just couldn't make any progress. In the end, it took a few months of work with an angle grinder and flap wheel to strip it down.

Caps were welded over the open ends of the box tube, and the frame was painted with tremclad hammered black paint. I like this paint as it goes on easy with a brush and doesn't show brush strokes. It's also fairly resistant to scatches and dents.

More pics to come soon

I like it. I've always been intrigued by the idea of using one of these as a base to work with.

The burning question I have is; will there be a homage to the mac and cheese somehow? Mayne a little mac n cheese noodle sticker/logo? lol

It seems to be a nice start. before i found this thing, i also contemplated using a Lowes trailer. I have seen some nice builds from them on here, but it wasn't something i wanted to do.

At the moment there isnt any homage to the Mac and Cheese name. it also is no longer that colour anywhere. My wife and i have discussed putting some kind of decal on it though.

I like the looks of this one. Most use the tires air pressure as a suspension.
Nice to have springs. I would do a pull out kitchen from the rear where the vent screen is now.
Solid walls inside to store gear and access with the gull wing doors.
Water tank and pump on front where the frame extends.

Thanks. I've actually got a lot done to it already and have used it for a few small trips.

I have tried to upload more pics, but since the update its telling me all my photos are too large for the server. I'm hoping that gets changed soon and I can post some more pics.

A few more pics that I have resized manually to be able to upload.

Here is the frame with the floor installed. its made from a fiberglass panel glued to 1/2" plywood. Its bolted in to some angle that was welded to the frame, and then all the joints were sealed with polyurethane sealant. There is leds mounted underneath to give a little glow while at camp. There is 6 white leds and 4 red leds under there, on two different switches. 20160516_212349.jpg

these are the leds im using. They are all aluminum housings and I think each one is 1W.

A 21 gallon water tank was installed on top of the floor, right in the middle above the axle so that water usage doesn't affect the trailer balance. It was covered with more 1/2" plywood. It has an RV style hose fill connector and vent on the passenger side, and outputs to a 3.2GPM pump on the drivers side, then through a water filter.

When I first started dreaming of this project, my original goal was to make a little teardrop trailer with a bed inside and the kitchen out the back. My wife and I didn’t mind the tent camping, but it always rained on us and getting water in the tent was inevitable.

We were also camping from a 2008 Ford Ranger, so every time we left the campsite and every night, we would need to put the cooler and food bins into the cab. The next morning, out seats would be wet and muddy from the bins sitting on them.

Then, when the wife got pregnant, we knew that a teardrop wouldn’t work for us. That’s when our attention turned to more of an expedition style trailer with a RTT that we could fit both of us and a couple kids.

I found this frame and was very happy because I should have been able to make the trailer light enough that it could be pulled by both my Ranger and the wife’s Ford Escape. Since the Ranger won’t hold a car seat with the sideways jump seats in the back, we would need to take the Escape on any family trips. The original hubs were also the same bolt pattern and offset as the two vehicles, so we wouldn’t need to carry a separate spare.

The rims that came on the trailer were fairly rusty, and the tires were very sun cracked and almost completely bald. My wife got a sidewall puncture in one of her tires with about 20% tread left. She decided to replace all 4, so two if the old ones got recommissioned for the trailer.

Shortly after that, I traded in the Ranger for a really good deal on a 2016 Nissan Frontier, and then the transmission went in the Escape. Now the Frontier is the tow vehicle, and its pulls very nicely, but we no longer have the ability to use the vehicle spare.

More pics and info to come when I get a chance to resize them.
