Project Pokemontero

Hey guys,

Recently I bought a 91 Montero RS LWB V6 from a good friend of mine. He had bought it as a parts truck, but quickly realized that although it needed work, it was too nice to just scavenge. I decided that for the $800 even with needing work it would probably be a good father/son project for my oldest son (age 14) and I. We picked it up on Tuesday, and started working on it a little last night after I got home from work. My son is not very mechanical, but is willing to learn, and truth be told I wasn't very handy at his age either. I may not be very handy even now at 41, but I can do a few things.

We came up with the name of the project as he loves Pokémon, and it just fit together with Montero. I wanted to go over the whole truck last night, and make a list of things it needs, but instead we successfully repaired the rear door that were not opening properly. The right rear wouldn't open at all, and the left rear would only open from the inside. Getting the door card off of the right rear wasn't easy , but we got it, and figured out that there wasn't anything broken, just that the mechanisms were all crusty from not being used in quite some time. A bunch of lubricant, and working the handles proved to be the fix. The left side was the same, but it only needed a little lube.

So far in my head I know the truck needs head gaskets as there is oil in the coolant. I plan to probably tackle that first as it is the most glaring problem. I plan to do the water pump, and timing belt if it has one as well while we are in there. It also needs a battery, as it doesn't currently have one, a battery tie down, as that is broken/missing,tires, a dome light, front bumper as it is dented, and a thorough going over. It seems all the lights worked when we went to look at it a month ago aside from the hazards, but the relay was pulled out for that circuit as the seller had it in his 88 Raider to try to figure out why his hazards weren't working. No idea if the AC works, and truth be told I'm not sure I really care.

The truck seems low on options as it doesn't have the suspension seat, or cool incline-o-meter/altimeter, headlamp squirters, or things like cruise control. It does have power windows, and you can lock the rear gate with a switch on the dash that is exactly the same as my 89 Mitsubishi Delica Starwagon. Doesn't appear to have power door locks though. That is the same as my Delica as well, but with the rear gate lock on my Delica it does lock the sliding door as well(if closed).

I only have one picture of it so far, but I will get more. Any help in sourcing used parts, or wisdom when it comes to repairing the engine troubles would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking forward to trying to get the oil out of the cooling system.

Sorry about the wall of text. I had paragraphs, but for some reason they are not showing like that in the post. Any help with that?

I was mistaken, I just noticed the montero does indeed have cruise control. Doesn't look like it has power locks though.

Good looking ride! Should be a great father/son project. For a Service Manual, go to mitsubishilinks.com, and get the proper service manual. Also check on 4X4Wire, between here and there, you've got some great reference and help as you need it.

I need lots of stuff. Windshield washer bottle, dome light, battery tie down, front bumper. If you can find anything like that please let me know.

I have to say that even in our short time with this truck, it is very well engineered and put together quite well. It seems the Japanese really knew what they were doing in the 80's. I've been quite impressed with my old 82 Toyota hi-lux I owned years ago, as well as my Delica, and this Montero. These are not fancy /flashy vehicles, but get the job done, and seem almost indestructible.

They were good rigs. Age is the biggest issue these days. Like any vehicle there are weaknesses. A critical one is to fish plate or upgrade the rear trailing arms to Gen 2 before they snap off-road.

Hey guys,

Looking to get some stuff for the project for my son as a Christmas gift. Anyone have any spare parts lying around that they would be willing to sell?

very simple rigs. sturdy assemblies,
the engines are simplicity defined.
the cat converter likely will need replacement or , ahem, cleaning out.
replace the pipe from water pump to the rear of the engine 68 dollars at dealer.

rubber on mitsus is very sturdy.
oil cam seals on the back of the head need a very light coat of silicone when you reinstall.

interior plastics are precious and hard to find.
