I did end up verifying that approach works to kick on the motor to listen for screechy/grinding noises. In my cases, since it was intermittent I couldn't always replicate it.
However, when I replaced everything (pictures coming in a later post) I noticed mine was dying but not as bad as some of the other examples, so I think I correctly gathered all the early warning signs and fixed it before it stranded me.
