Purchase advise for synthetic winch line & fairlead

OK guys, I've read all the threads on synthetic winch lines and am sold on their use on my rig (2001 XJ). I'd like to cut the weight of the ARB / Winch combo.

However, after reading all the threads I'm pretty confused about what a solid purchase would be. There are so many different brands and types that I'm a little overwhelmed. Normally I do my own research but my forte is more around mechnical and electronics. The rope/wire stuff is a little overmy head.

So what synthic which line and fairlead would you recommend for a daily driver / expedition vehicle? I'd appreciate it you could point me to a fairly priced vendor and give me a part number :). Thanks. you guys are really awesome. Now that I have a decent vehicle I'm looking forward to going on an excursion with you.

I realize that this is a significant expense, but keep in mind that this is a wear tiem & will need replacing at some point. I doubt that you can miss with any of the brand names out there. Personally, I'd find the vendor that you mesh with the best and go with them.

Nearly everyone will have a vendor recommendation, so I'll offer mine, Scott @ Rockstomper. I've known him since the late 90's on the ORC toyota list. Square shooter and a good guy.

Thanks! the 4x4 shops I've ventured into here in Austin all seem like knuckle heads. I trust you guys 10x more.

Don't go to a 4X4 shop, go to a "primary vendor". Specifically a place that sells wire rope, shackles, pulleys, etc. The place up here also sells synthetic line. And study the online catalog for Samson rope. Amsteel Blue seems like a good choice according to both the catalog specs and people experienced with it (not me, I like wire rope). A rigging shop will sell you line with a thimble and hook at the end and any recovery gear you need. It will not be the cheapest made stuff, it will be US made high quality and they can give you knowledgeable advice about what size stuff you need. Look under "wire rope" or "rope" in the Yellow Pages if you don't know where to go. Or contact Samson (synthetic lines) or Crosby (metal stuff like shackles, pulleys, hooks) about where their nearest vendor is.

when you get our rope make sure to get a few 10' sections of chaffing guards it is really just a ylon sleeve that can be moved up and down the length of the rope incasr you are in a situation that makes the rope scrape over a rock etc. They are cheap from rockstomper like $10. I run a 3/8 line rated at 24,000 on my winch this way my 8k winch will most likely never break it. Most of the guys local to me run amsteel and it seems to work well. I have only sen one break.

Another vote fro 'Rockstomper' I have purchased Amsteel Blue winch rope from him twice in the last couple of years. I get a foundry type interlocking hook which he puts onto the line for me at purchase.
