Question about payload/towing

Howdy,

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 QC 4x4 with a Hemi and I've been thinking about getting a FWC. If I do end up getting one would I still be able to tow an average sized ski boat or fishing boat? What about a Baja Bug on a trailer?

I know I can carry a FWC, and I know I can tow a boat or a bug, but I didn't know if I could do both. I know that the FWC is pretty much the lightest of the popups so I'm hoping I have a chance. Upgrading trucks is not an option.

Thanks in advance, and I'm sorry I don't have any weight ratings for you, but I figure you guys pretty much would be able to give me a yes or no regardless.

hopefully others will chime in with their personal experiences ...

In my personal opinion you should be fine (not the slick salesman selling you here either). My last 3 trucks have been Ford F-150's, so im familar with campers and towing with 1/2 ton trucks.

But there are 2 things I would highly reccomend to do it.

# 1. Add a set of "air bags" to your rear suspension.

OR

Add a set of heavy duty over load springs to the rear suspension.

AND ...

Upgrade your tires to a set of "E" Rated truck tires.

The "E" Rates truck tires will make a world of difference, drive & handle better, and be safer over-all carrying the extra weight.

Outside of these, you should be "A-OK"

Look for something called the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating, or GCVWR. You'll probably find it in your owners manual or on the driver's door pillar. The GCVWR is the maximum rated weight of your vehicle and payload and trailer. Keep the total weight under the GCVWR and you are good to go. Exceed it, and you are in test pilot territory.
