Question about the Yaesu 2800-m

I've got a 2800m and it's a great radio. Locally I pretty much stay on 2 frequencies but lately have been venturing out. Last weekend I had some driving to do and was able to listen in on a couple of morning nets and decided to enter the PL codes into the radio. I made transmissions on each one so I know they work but today all the codes were gone and it seems at a default, 100.0.

I leave the radio in VFO mode and tune into each frequency but I'm thinking that when I turn the radio off the codes default unless they are in memory. Can anyone verify this for me. The radio is wired to a constant hot source and the battery is fine. I just noticed this code default thing so I haven't had time to go back out and play around with it. Because I'm still a beginner I haven't taken the time to program all the frequencies and pl codes. Is this the only way for them to be stored for next time?

Hope my random thought came out clear enough. Let me know if you need better explanation.

Thanks,
Mike

First, are you certain they worked? Did you get a tone back from the repeater?
FM radios generally aren't operated in VFO mode. They are usually programmed by the operator to function with repeaters in the area. You'll need to program these functions into memory.

I assume I get a tone back if I'm able to speak to others via the repeater. I just got in from messing around with the radio a bit. I have it run on hot power because I'd like to be able to listen to it when the vehicle is off. It's got a timer on it so I don't have to worry about leaving it on. Anyways, if it's on and the vehicle is off and I then turn the vehicle on the radio turns off and then on again, kind of like my stereo (if it were in the acc position and then the ignition turned on). I thought maybe this was it but no. Now I'm wondering if I input more than one PL code if the second one replaces the first one.

One reason I don't put everything into memory is because I don't know which ones I want yet and find one or two more ever week while operating in VFO mode and scan. If I'm out of VFO mode and scan it will only scan the few I would have in memory. I guess I'll have to read the manual in places again and start playing guess and check.

Right now the radio is on an active frequency (repeater) with a PL of 123.0 and all is well. I can transmit and they receive. I'm thinking that if I go to another frequency and enter it's PL, say 100.0 it will replace the PL in the radio, and that of the other frequency, with 100.0. Sooooo, when I go back to the first frequency no one will hear me because it will be on 100.0 and not 123.0.

Sorry, just thinking out loud and figured since the 2800 is so recommended maybe someone knows off hand and can speak from their experiences.

I have 3 2800's

you can set tones and offsets while in vfo mode but
It will loose them as soon as its cut off or moved off freq unless saved into memory , which takes 2 button pushes ....

Buy the cable and get some software so you can program the radio with a PC. It makes everything so much easier.

Ok. I haven't found this in the manual. Can you advise. Which two buttons. I assume you have to lock it in somehow.

Easy set up you repeater in vfo mode , press and hold the dmr mv button untill it beeps and shows a blinking memory channell beside the freq , you can spin the knob at this point to select which memory # you want to save it to or it should already by at the first empty spot in which you just hit the Dmr button again . There now switch over to memory mode and there is your repeater saved .
