Range Rover Classic Question

Does anyone know, or maybe someone has tried it, if you can swap out the electronic control unit on a '89 Classic with one from something like a D1 with a 3.9 that will give you the fault code number rather than just the "Check Engine Light"? I am no expert when it comes to the "Rover Gremlins" that may arise from doing something like this.
Thanks for any input.

My 93 Range Rover Classic has the ECU with the fault code display. I think you can just plug it in to the 89. It looks identical to the one on my old 89, although I never compared them side-by-side. I would search on rangerovers.net first to make sure. If that will work, then PM me as I am parting out the 93 and can make you a deal on the ECU.

Thanks, I will look it up and see what I find.
