Rave CD, copy onto HD

Maybe I'm the last person to realize this, just throwing it out there in case I'm not.

I downloaded the Rave CD for my truck years ago, and have a copy in various places. One in the truck, at home, and at work, so I can look at it wherever I am. I find it's a bit of a pain to use. Slow to load pages, and just putting the CD in the drive can make my work laptop act funny.

I recently got a cheap Netbook that is largely intended as a "Truck-puter", and I want to use Rave on it. But, it doesn't have a DVD-ROM drive. On a whim, I tried copying the Rave file structure onto a USB stick, and then dumped that on the drive. I was worried I was going to need a DVD-ROM emulator to trick Rave into thinking it's a CD-ROM, but no. Clicked on Rave.exe, and it runs. It even installs the program icon on the desktop, which somehow knows to look in that folder instead of looking for the CD as I feared.

As a bonus, pages load lightning fast now.

I went ahead and deleted the Rave program from my laptop, and then copied the files over onto the drive, and ran the program again, now it's installed on the laptop. I don't need to carry the CD around anymore, and it runs so much faster as well.

Forgive the dumb question but is this the same CD ROM that has the multiple work manuals for a specifc LR? I've tried two of the CD ROM's from Atlantic British and neither would load the PDF's. I kept getting a pop up that the PDF was missing or damaged (or something like that). I really need a manual for my DI.

Hey Wander - try downloading it directly to your computer. The files are available at LRR... http://www.landroverresource.com/

I think you might be, LOL. I never load the CD, not even sure where it is exactly.

Well, all along I ASSumed there was some sort of copyright protection which is why the files came in as an ISO instead of just a zipped directory.

Anyway, just in case there are any other stragglers out there, now you know. ;)

I'm not sure what you have, but I just downloaded it. It's invaluable. IMO, it's a selling feature of the trucks. Recently I complained about the reliability of the truck. But having the factory shop manual on CD almost makes up for it.

I've never had the CD, just downloaded it on my home computer and keep a copy on my memory stick I keep in my pocket.

That way, as long as there is a computer around, i can look up anything I want.

Save the complete disc content in one file and then get a programme that pretends to be a drive and runs the content of this folder like a disk.

Search for "disk emulator" and choose one you like

There are several versions of the RAVE floating around. The one on landroversource is an older one that doesn't require a CD drive emulator.

There are others hidden at green-oval that are newer
These require a CD emulator (I use Deamon Tools), or for you to burn the image to a CD.

Tom, do any of those include TSBs? I had one several years ago that had TSBs but I cant find it anymore. The landroverresource one doesnt have them.

Well, that's what I was getting at. I didn't even have to do that. Just copied the entire CD over into a directory and it runs with no problem.

Tom, sounds like I have the older version then. Does the newer version offer anything that would be beneficial?
