RC 4x4 2nd Gen Experiences (power, auto vs manual, mpg etc.)

I've been contemplating getting a truck for quite some time now and have looked at driven several 2nd gen Tacomas but am a bit concerned about power on the 2.7L (haven't driven them on any steep hills). My first vehicle was a 1993 Toyota Pickup 22re with a 5 speed (drove from age 11 to 24...lots of fond memories) and I also had a 86 4runner 22re 5speed for several years prior to getting my Montero Sport which I love but it is 15 years old and a truck would be more practical for my use (hunting, fishing, hiking).

Needs:
-Decent fuel economy as I have a 64 mile round trip commute (currently 4 days per week but I might be able to cut it to 3)...this might be my biggest concern but gas is currently very inexpensive. I also will be making an annual 4k-5k mile round trip out to MT while I live in TN.
-Enough power for 2 light people, a 75lb retriever and a 15lb terrier plus light gear.
-Fairly comfortable (concerned about the bench, which I swapped in my 93', in the manual RC as they don't appear swappable with side airbags)...this is really the only reason for considering the auto.
-Carry a light camper shell
-Possibly tow a 600lb teardrop at some point in the future.

What are your guys experience with the 2trfe? Does the auto kill the power in the RC?

I think a Regular Cab has plenty of room and it saves 300lbs over a Access cab and they're cheaper to boot. Seems like a I can find a very low mileage example for around 20k. I do not plan on running a lift, larger tires, armor etc. stock sized all terrains will get me just about anywhere with the factory approach/departure/breakover angles on the RC. I also plan on adding cruise and intermittent wipers as it seems like it is plug in play.

I did drive a RC SB 4.7l 4wd Tundra and absolutely loved it but the fuel economy for commuting would suck and they are a rare beast.

Bit rambling but I appreciate any info/thoughts.

With stock tires I think the 4cyl is a great motor. Heck my brother has one with 33's and stock gearing, and I couldn't outrun him in my 1 ton cab chassis duramax a few years back.
