Expo,

So I Jay Ayala and I pulled the heads from the white 98 2.5 that I bought a couple of weeks ago. There was coolant in the cylinders. The Wife and I have decided that we will purchase a re-maunfactured engine but from whom ? We really want to have some reliability and a warranty. I live in Portland Oregon and would like to find a shop that does re-manufactured and stands behind there product. Meaning the last shop I got my other re-manufactured from came with a 3year / unlimited miles. Before everyone asks " Why don't you buy another engine from them ?". The reason is simple. They are a great engine machine shop in terms of facilities , etc. However they do not build these 3.5's that often . So it was a learning curve for them and we had words more than once. There were issues with head gaskets to start after the first install. I pushed on the issue and came to find out that they did not use OEM or Felpro like asked when I put the order in. Because of there lack of attention to detail I paid the price and had to have the motor ripped into again. Several months later on a trip back from Montana with the wife a piston on the left side decided to come loose a bit and clanking around making all kinds of noises and that was fun to drive back 8 hours and listen to. That time the entire motor had to come out and things were not put back in a proper way. Meaning o-rings were reused for water inlet and crossover and made me look for a coolant leak. It drove me nuts and then had other issues related to wiring because somebody did not remember to keep wires off the egr for example . Not to mention all the rental cars , etc and fighting about warranties and so on. We are trying to avoid this issue.

I will keep the motor that's in it now to rebuild at another date. Turbo or Super Charger ???

So I am looking to hear if anyone has a lead on a good shop in the NW, California, else where?

Will use the right gaskets , OEM or Felpro
Machine work percise
3year / 100,000 or unlimited within that 3 year period

Thx for reading

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
I'd gamble on a low milage USDM engine. I looked and found an '04 motor with 44k miles in a Montero Sport that had been hit on the side. Motor was in fantastic shape and just as the pictures suggested. Or diy rebuild if you want it done right.

Yeah that was a lot of fun. Personally, I would DIY but I have a garage, space tools and time.

I would buy a full engine seal set, remanufactured heads from Clearwater Cylinder Heads and take the block to get the crank turned, cylinders bored or just honed, the block hot tanked and measured for new bearings and rings. New pistons too.

This doesn't really apply to you because SOHC but for anyone with DOHC be careful with heads machined and sent to you and having your heads rebuilt because machine shops see to thing that the cams are all the same or that there are only 2 pairs of the same. They seem to almost always jumble them up even if you tell them before hand. Just mark them your self before dropping them off OR pay really close attention to the markings on them.
There are only a few companies who specialize in 6G rebuilds and they are pricey but you get what you pay for with those guys.

It can be fun too. Just make sure you have experienced help if it's your first time. Looking at Clearwater Heads too for my '94 SR with busted timing belt.
