Really cool winch mount with a stock bumper.

I saw this cross linked on clubfrontier.org. Its a perfect solution to my winching needs. To bad I don't have the ability to weld.

I like that mount, very clean and simple.

You could have that cut and bent out of one section of plate pretty easy.

Yes, depending on the joint angle, 3 passes with a decent root should do just fine.

I don't think you need 3/8" material for that mount though.

I would see if you could find a winch plate that could span the entire frame from outside of the rail to outside of the rail. Then just cap the ends with some 1/4" plate to form the mounts to the frame. That would tie the parts together much stronger also because it eliminates the 90 degree bend needed in the mount.

If you live semi close ( 4 corners area ) I will weld it for you.

Thanks for the offer but I live in the PNW. So if not 3/8 then 1/4? Is there a reason to buy a winch plate as opposed to just using a piece of plate steel?

Oh, if I wanted to add some shackle mounts what thickness should be used for that? I have seen the pre fab ones before, but if there is no real need for the expense then I would rather not pay for it.

If designed right 1/4" will be fine for some tow/recovery points. Buying a winch channel with the front and back 90 degree lip is going to be cheaper than trying to make it for most people. I don't know how wide the frame measurement is, but I have seen some decent universal winch plates for under $100 with all the holes drilled for mounting and the hawse/roller slot.

If your limited on fabrication equipment you might be able to get the end plates cut on an NC plasma or laser table for not that much ( as long as your not in a hurry ). Most places will do parts mixed in with other runs or orders.

they make a mounting kit like that for the ford F series trucks...hides the rope behind the licence plate...very stealthy!!:sombrero:

I looked into the winch plates and found a few for under a hundred bucks. Would it be totally incorrect to bolt the plate to two pieces of angle that would tie into the frame. My reasoning being the winch is bolted down anyway. If I were to get it all welded up do you think drilling out the threads in the frame for the bolts and sleeve it with tube then bolting it straight through would be worth the expense?

Bolting the winch plate to the angle iron would be ok. You are going to get more deflection since everything isn't rigid, but as long as the hole tolerance isn't too bad you should fine.

Would sleeving the frame be better, yes. I don't know if you really need to, what are the size of factory bolts? Are there any more factory bolt locations you can tie into? The further you can spread the load the better.

Would you be able to get a high lift under the front bumper with this setup?

If not, I would figure out how you could. Even if it meant using a small receiver hitch mount so you could slide something in to jack from.

That is a good idea. Maybe I will add a piece of angle underneath to create a lip...

Maybe just make a small adapter to allow you to use the shackle mount holes to lift with the high lift?
