Rear Swing outs for XJs

A friend of mine that is a successful fabricator out of Edmonton Alberta is going into the off-road manufacturing business. His products will be only available thru distributors.

What he is looking for right now is input in what the people want in a XJ swing out.
I have already said incorporate a winch mount, jerry can holder, trailer hitch.

We where also thinking about a double tier career that will hold two 33’s or smaller.

What dose everyone think some input please.

A winch mount and trailer hitch on a swing out tire carrier? I don't see how that would be possible...

I'm about to purchase the Detours Tailbone system for my '98.

As well as adding a full size spare and freeing up cargo space, I'm looking for a place to mount a Hi-lift jack.

Maybe a license plate relocation bracket as well...

Im all about the Tailbone system as well...Excellently priced option over a full bumper/tire carrier combo. As for plate relocation, my buddy came up with this and posted it on NAXJA...looks clean and stock.

Sorry I forgot to use the world translator when I posted. Around here when you say “swing out” that includes the replacement bumper.

OK, now I feel lame..... When something is blatantly obvious, I'm ususlly the last one to get it....

So yeah, recovery points for sure. Trailer hitch, yes.

Winch mount? Maybe as an option... At least that's my opinion. I really don't see much use for it here (California desert)... Might be handy if you spend a lot of time in the wilderness. I mean A LOT....

Exrunner... Yeah, I'm over there too. Great low buck fix for a common problem...

Looking at the Detours Tailbone design, I would note that the weight of the tire would best be supported closer to the actual hinge. Having the heavy tire that far away from the hinge puts unwanted stress on the whole system, including the bumper. If you had to carry a tire, you'd want to hold it next to your body, not out in front with your arms extended. Same concept here. If you're planning on putting a whole bunch of "off-road" gear on the bumper like fuel cans, Hi-lift, shovel, etc., put it off to the side with the hinge. This will not only relieve some stress to the system, but in theory, leave at least some visibility out the rear window remaining.

My Garvin Wilderness rear bumper has all this down, but one thing I don't care for is the extra weight. I think there's a lot of steel that they could have done without. Try for simplicity, less is more. But whatever you do, do not sacrifice quality for anything!

Big thing for me would to have it look integrated. I think that is why so many people like the tailbone system. A lot of XJ aftermarket is fairly simple flat 2x4 steel for a bumper. That is fine for a CJ/YJ/TJ, but doesn't look right on an XJ.

Find a way to incorporate the bumper end caps or replace them with something aesthetically pleasing.

I kept my end caps. Very stealth-looking.

Dual tire carrier is fine, as long as it's a dual swing system. I wouldn't want both tires on a single swing bar. If the customer doesn't want dual tires, still offer the dual swing with fuel/water carries on the non-tire side.

I agree about keeping the end caps or creating a similar heavy duty caps. HD end caps is what I would prefer as a customer.

I would also suggest incorporating tail-light protection (see below)

On my home brew rear bumper I did NOT incorporate nice end caps and it bugs me everytime I look at it...and it's my Daily Driver :Wow1: But I DID incorporate tail-light protection and I smile everytime I see it.

I plan to modify the corner to be rounded and match the radius of the tail lights and fill in the gap between the bottom of the tail-light and the top of the bumper.

I actually emailed the guy that owns or operates or whatever the business about that exact point. He assured me that the hinge and everything were quite up to the task, and theyve never encountered a problem. I understand what you are saying, but I guess they have thought this through.

Mine has a built in trailer hitch and the previous owner tied it in to the stock trailer hitch mounting under the truck. I like this idea...
