Recommendations for rust proofing paint?

Hey all.

Im hoping to finally tackle a project ive wanted to do for a long time; rust proof the frame of my truck. It's a 94 Nissan Hardbody that still has plenty of life left, but all these winters and road salt have really taken a toll on the frame and underbody. Luckily the frame isnt rotted, it can be saved by some sanding and coating with a rust proofing paint.

My question is, what does everyone recommend?
I have a whole bunch of RustBullet (silver, and glossy black top coat) that bought for another project but scrapped that. Problem i have with rustbullet is that it hasnt been around as long as say Por-15, so its hard to find reviews about it. However the only thing i have coated with it is a skid plate that looks to holding up just fine.

Id really like to get a satin black finish instead though, so im leaning towards using Por15 on the frame, then saving all this rust bullet for other parts.

Does anyone have experience with Rustbullet? Or would you guys recommend just using Por15.. or something else?

por15 is ok on a clean surface, if its at all greasy or dirty, it wont stick,

and it needs over painting if exposed to UV light.

there are better paints to use. not sure what you guys can buy but look at boatyards.

Any of the so-called 'rust stopper' paints are, according to a friend in the protective coatings industry, a "moisture curing polyurethane paint."

POR-15 is an excellent paint if you follow the directions to the letter. Like most paints, the key is in the prep. POR does seem to be a bit finicky about near perfect prep.

What I've found works excellently for dealing with POR's UV sensitivity is to wait until the paint is tacky enough to leave a finger print, but not so wet that it comes off on your finger. When it is at that point I paint over it with a rattle can in the color of choice. I use Rustoleum for this, but I suspect that any aero-bombs will work.

Same technology

Don't be afraid of using the Rustbullet. Moisture cured urethane technology has been around for many many years before POR15 even existed. Rustbullet and KBS Coatings for that matter have just taken that old technology and brought it into the 21st century. From our experience, the POR-15 product has lost ground and is no longer what it was years ago. Our facility in TX does government contracted work on military vehicles and used the por for years as a primer. We ran the KBS RustSeal through many (8) different test for months and concluded that it was a way tougher coating than por-15...even the Rustbullet can out ahead of por-15. So don't be afraid to use it if you have it. KBS and them have just taken a proven older technology and applied some updated resin technology and created better products. :smiley_drive:
