Red Line Oil 2014 JKUR

Hey guys,

I am at 800 miles on my new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. I have run Red Line 5-30 in my past Land Rover Defender which had flat tappet style engines with great results. Transitioning to this much more modern 3.6 penstar V6 I am wondering what synthetic oil I should use. I would really like to get the best oil for this Jeep so don't bring economics into this consideration. Starting in 2013 the manual started to call for 5-20 but I feel that is only to improve the gas millage for the CAFE standards. In my 2014 manual it states the following:

Engine Oil Viscosity — 3.6L Engine
MOPAR® SAE 5W-20 engine oil approved to Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395 such as Pennzoil®, Shell Helix® or equivalent. is recommended for all operating temperatures. This engine oil improves low temperature starting and vehicle fuel economy.

The engine oil filler cap also shows the recommended engine oil viscosity for your engine. For information on engine oil filler cap location, refer to the “Engine Com- partment” illustration in this section.

NOTE: MOPAR® SAE 5W-30 engine oil approved to Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395 such as Pennzoil®, Shell Helix® or equivalent may be used when SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting MS-6395 is not available.

Synthetic Engine Oils
You may use synthetic engine oils provided the recom- mended oil quality requirements are met, and the recom- mended maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed.

The Red Line oil website doesn't specifically state compliance with the MS-6395 but I know that neither does Mobil 1 and obviously tens of thousands of users have been using Mobil 1 for ever. So my question to you experts is, should I use RedLine motor oil? Should I use 5-30 or 5-20? What provides the best protection and longevity for the engine? Thank you!

I'm not sure what my dealer uses, but if I do the oil change, I use Mobi 1 (I think that's what it's called... grey/silver container?).

Haven't heard of that oil... But my opinion is all the synthetics are really good. I run Mobile 1 in my 13 JKUR. I'd stick with the recommended grade of oil. Most often the the grade decision is related to bearing tolerances.

All synthetic oils are good...

Not necessarily and there is a reason engineers recommend a certain standard of oil for their vehicles. "Everybody uses it" is not a technical standard.

I ran Mobil 1 for years. When I started using the JK to pull a Krawler teardrop (read: severe service) I found that within about 2K miles I was getting lifter noise on engine startup.

After doing some serious research I switched to Amsoil Signature Synthetic, their best, and have never heard another peep out of the engine. This change is currently at 7,600 miles and I'm still towing the trailer.

I am now in the process of changing all my fluids to Amsoil.

Here you go. CLICKY This is the info page for their Signature Synthetic engine oil. All three grades, Signature, XL and OE meet the Chrysler MS-6395 standard. There is a wealth of information on the Amsoil site.

I hope this helps!

Yes thank you. So after a long drawn out discussion on Bob is the Oil Guy forum, I have concurred that Amsoil is the best oil for the JK. I'll be ordering all fluids from Amsoil. Cheers and thanks!

If the motor blows the manufacture can call for an oil sample revealing that you did not use the recomended oil. I'm not sure what they would do but they would not be the first to deny a warranty claim for this.

If one uses an oil that meets the manufacturers specs., i.e. Chrysler MS-6395, then it matters not. The link above will take you to the fact sheet showing that it does. Keeping receipts and maintenance logs pretty much puts that to bed up front.

It is also good, if you are in the USA, to become familiar with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

redline was a great company for oil back when we were racing motox in the 80 and 90's I can not speak to their auto line but I would bet it would be a top end oil.

as far as amsoil goes. I love it have been using it in my drivetrains for a long time. 2 tj's an lj and soon a jku. The switch in my tj's saw a marked improvement in manual shifting. smooth as butter. my low mile 98 on amsoil and 33" pulled 17/24 for gas mileage. I always thought the amsoil had alot to do with that and dam I still miss that chilli pepper red 98 spot lol
