Registering a old military trailer in California?

If it has a readable ID badge, was made for the U.S. Military, and you can prove with papers you purchased rather than stole it, you should have no problem.

If it already has a uniquely identifying number permanently affixed to it, they may not. On the C.U.T. we were told this as they gave it a new VIN, and I was asked if there was such a number on my grandad's trailer. In the case of the C.U.T. it did not, so they gave it one. In the case of my grandad's trailer it has his initials and the date of mfg stamped in it.

Cool, thanks for the info. Hopefully AAA will take care of it for me. I hate dealing with the DMV.

AAA wanted to see 2 vin numbers on the CDN military trailer I registered. PO had removed the CDN registration plate and had used an old homebuilt trailer vin plate he'd 'made up'. Slapped that on and registered it in AZ w/o issue.

AAA wouldn't just accept just one vin plate tho. Took my fees so the 'clock' would stop ticking on timely registration here in the Republik of California, but had to go to DMV anyway. No issues there with one VIN tag at all.

AAA told me their contract 'stipulated' that they verify two vin tags on anything they register. I think the gal just didn't want to walk out in the rain to verify it!

I'd think if it were sold by a business...
it would come with the proper documentation needed to secure a title.

If it's never had a civilian title... the DMV will make one for it.

Why not ask the place that your purchasing from, if they include the proper documentation, with your purchase ?

For California, you need to have it "inspected" and have a "vin varification form" completed by CHP or another agency. Where it says "vin varified by" they should put "varified by confidential means" which will get you past the DMV inspector. I've filled out several of these forms, it's really not a bad process.
