Replacing 04 Disco Heated Front Windshield??

On a my most recent hog hunting trip in Northern CA, I was piloting my 04 Disco through some nasty canyon and mountain lands. We have been receiving a decent amount of wet weather and the mountainsides were fairly unstable at points (several rockslides, washouts, etc).

Well, a rogue rock came tumbling down from the hillside and smacked my front windshield pretty good. Consequently, a medium size crack emerged at the bottom of the window and two days later a spider crack extended from that point all the way to the top of the windshield.

Normally, I would just replace the window and be done with it. But, it seems that replacing these heated versions are very expensive.

Can I replace the windshield with a non-heated one? The price savings is significant unless anyone knows of a decent shop around the Bay Area that does OEM replacements at a good price.

Advice/thoughts are appreciated! :smiley_drive:

Not sure about Cali, but most States mandate the insurance company replace your windshield without charging the deductible, as driving with a cracked windscreen is considered dangerous.

You should check with your insurance co.

Liability only coverage will not cover the windshield.

I have looked around and it seems that its around $800-$900 for a new, heated windshield and about $250 for a non-heated one. I wouldn't be so cheap normally but I would rather invest in my National Luna fridge and other goodies.

Try unplugging the harness from the windshield and see what happens. If no bells or whistles go off I'd say you can safely put in a standard, non-heated, whindshield. The plug is at the base of the windshield under the hood.

There is one on each side, for clarity.

I had ours replaced due to a crack. No issues. Just make sure you have it done at a place that has good reviews. You have liability only on an '04? Good luck with that.

Thanks team, I will do all of that.

Yes, liability only. Its my dedicated hunting/camping/expo vehicle so it lives in my garage most of the time. The Yota is the one I baby (2010>2004).

go with dealer OEM only. the non dealer ones are thinner and crack easier in my expereince. (Make sure it has the LAND ROVER crest on it, not just plinkington)

I actually hate my heated windscreen. Want it? ;)

I find the tiny wires inside it really create a lot of glare from oncoming cars at night.

Hi, am getting ready to replace mine for the second time since I've owned the truck. First time I replaced it with a heated one, this time I don't want to run it through the insurance company so I decided to do the research myself.

I have called 5 places, the cheapest I found was $160 installed, the most expensive was $550 installed for a non heated windshield.

Installing a non heated windshield, should not cause you any problems. its controlled by a switch, car should not know the difference.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I am going to try out a non-OEM replacement (non-heated). With the places I bring my Rover, I know I will get another crack in the window sometime. It just seems that Murphy's law takes over when I am hunting and things never follow the script.

After I replace it, I will see if there is serious quality issues by going non-OEM. Otherwise, if it works fine and saves me money, well :)

Thanks again team. :smiley_drive:
