Researching the 2.25 with overdrive

Hello, can someone tell me the specs/hp on the 2.25 engine with overdrive? It will be in a series 3 LWB? Going to be used as a slow and steady camping beast of burden:smiley_drive:

Thank you gentlemen

I believe they were, generally, 69 bhp. Depending on year, compression etc. The overdrive merely reduces engine rpm and you can "split gears" with it. I am by no means an expert. So that being said.
Here is a fishing pole and bait my friend.

Those three should keep you "fed" for a while. Enjoy! "don't worry little brother, there are more!"

I know this is off topic a bit but my favorit gear with the overdrive is the split between 3rd and 4th. its the gear that on my 88 gets me up the hills with out slowing to much:coffeedrink:.

Specs? What are those

I have driven a S3 109 with the 2.5NA diesel in it, and I currently have S2a 88 with the 2.25. Both with an Fairy OD. the diesel 109 would go 70 (based on GPS) all day long, but i think you will find that a 2.25 w/OD to be slow in a 109 (but less so than an 2.25 w/o the OD.) The 88 will do 60MPH in OD but its not supper happy about it, and any incline makes it want to slow down. of course the 109 was being driven at sea level, and the 88 is being flogged around at a mile high. so I hope that helped at all, but as I review, it seems to be a little murky. :D

Specs? Did you want specs?? I have specs!

2.25L SIII petrol engine: 70 hp @ 4000 RPM, 120 lbft @ 2000 RPM weight approx. 450 lbs.

The highway cruise sweet spot is between 3000 and 3300 RPM
The engine torque drops off quickly below peak torque, though it will pull smoothly to well below 800 RPM (just no torque there). This is for a fresh engine. Tired distributor, tired valves or rings and a stretched timing chain can lower that considerably. If you are trying to make best speed up a hill, 2400 RPM is a good place to downshift without falling off that steep torque curve.

Gearbox & transfercase overall ratios calculated at the axle:

High range:
  1. 19.88:1
  2. 12.00:1
  3. 8.05:1
  4. 5.4:1

Low range:
  1. 40.70:1
  2. 24.60:1
  3. 16.50:1
  4. 11.10:1

An overdrive is a 2 speed gearbox that sits between the gearbox and transfercase (gearwise). It can be used with any low and high range gear. There are at least 3 brands currently on the market. Low ratio is 1:1. so it does not affect the ratios above. High range of the 3 brands range between about 27-28% overdrive. So take any ratio above and adjust it by 27 or 28% to give you the overall ratio in any gear with overdrive engaged.

The stock 2.25L engine has a hard time pushing 4 over if there is a hill, headwind or at altitude. 3 over is a GREAT ratio for many paved mountains.

With a 32 inch dia tyre (stock 109 tyre diameter) and no overdrive, a 109 cruises very nicely at 55 MPH The engine is happy at that speed all day, day after day.

Thank you gentlemen

I hope you don't mind that a lady replied.
