Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform Vibration/Wind Noise Need Help!!!

After a ton of agonizing and waffling on selling my B190 or converting it to 4wd I ended up selling it, let's face it, at the end of the day it is still a 22 year old van/rv and dumping $17-20k into it didn't seem reasonable especially since it was only getting 9-10mpg before the conversion :Wow1:

So after more agonizing I decided to remove my cab height topper and mounted a platform on my roof, via Thule/Yakima style track system (nutcerted) with low profile mounts that screw into rectangular washers in the track. I went with a RR Pioneer Platform On an 05 DC Tundra to mount a CVT Mt Shasta RTT I then added tracks to the bed rails to quick mount Yakima bars a MOAB basket and rocket box, this way if I want to use my truck as a truck I simply undo the bars and set the whole rack in the garage, this part is really handy and easy.
My problem is that the platform makes a horrendous noise and vibrates the roof of the truck, I even went with the "low profile" mounting plates. I don't remember that much noise or vibration when I had my basket and bars on my F-150 roof. Does anyone have a cheap/quick fairing solution to see if that will help before I drop the stupid $$$ that they want for the manufactured one??

I just don't know what your talking about. I don't know what truck it's on, how you mounted it or if it's a localized vibration. Some pictures should help.

It is mounted on an 05 DC Tundra, with Thule tracks and Rhino Racks low profile mounting hardware via 3 points per side screwed into rectangular nuts that slide in the tracks. The vibration is the entire cab area and it is noisy, like wind coming through slightly open windows even though they are definitely closed. Thanks for the response, I didn't realize it was so vague. :(
I would take pictures but I took it all apart.

Do you get vibration with just the Thule and rhino rack feet. No basket. Any specific speed this happens at? Have you added anything inside the basket to see if it changes? Add a wind fairing (zip ties and cardboard for temp setup). Get a small section of rubber to place between the low profile mount and the Thule rack. That's what I'd try. Could it be just the wind through the bars? it may be just that noisy.

Ah, wording is much better now.

I second the fairing idea. Have you checked Craigslist for a Thule or Yakima fairing? I believe both are shaped to be able to accommodate the "aero" bar shape which more or less appears to be the shape of the Rhino Rack platform rails.

:victory: Thanks, and I have no idea why I did not think about CL for a used fairing, bada bing!!! Found one in Denver and am going to go back to Rack Attack and see what solution they have for the mounting brackets.
