Ride to Mexico, Desert Race Car, Ride home. A quick weekend of fun.

Tim and Kelsey get lost..
A buddy of mine had a spare single seat 1600 racecar handy (we used to race a 2-1600 for years together) so I decided to hop on the Triumph and run down to Puerto Penasco, MX to race.

The motorcycle ride was fun and uneventful, but the desert race was eventful and epic! Just about everything you could imagine going wrong with an old racecar that had been sitting went wrong making it hilarious and fun.

Full pics and report are up on the blog:

Sounds like a great trip!! Definitely worth missing the REI Garage sale for!! :victory: Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks Tanner!

look at the construction at Puerto Penasco. Wow, what a difference 19 years makes...

Nice write up and pics.

Yah, seriously. You used to be able to drive down the beach to get anywhere you wanted. Now it's almsot completely high rise hotels and golf courses. The spot where the race was seems to be the last hold out of relatively un-built area. Oh well. Time to start visiting El Gulfo more. :sombrero:

Hey SOAZ, I'm guessing you didn't intentionally link a Gizmodo article about the stealth bomber instead of your blog? Guess I'm the first one to actually click your link!

Haha!! Good call! I wonder why it did that. I just pasted the link as you can see it, but in fact it does go to that article on Gizmodo. Have I been hacked? Oh well, it's fixed now. Thanks for the heads up Danimal!

great blog write up and I really dig that you were laughing through it all
That is a cool older car and I hope it can be saved

Also nice pics of the moto, looks like it was the best choice for the trip

I think that car will be ready to race with an engine rebuild, a new clutch reservoir, and some new fuel cell foam. These old cars never really die. I'd love to buy this one and put some sort of super 70's root beer colored metal flake paint! Then go and enter it in the NORRA Mexican 1000!

Get busy! You've got a week before it's time to leave for this year's event! :) I'll be prepping in the driveway this weekend.

Great writeup and pics, as always! You mention DocBaja as the driver of the Nissan truck. I know my buddy Dave Cookman was going to spend some time in the cockpit as well (he's in the background in the pic). Are they one and the same?

:sombrero: Oh, how I'd love to go! I want to do NORRA because it seems to combine the relaxed fun prerunning of baja with the more competitive stressful racing side. :costumed-smiley-007

One and the same. I know Dave from my buddy Brent Mckee. I worked at his fab shop in Tucson all through college (Called Mckee Motorsports at the time). Dave is always around working on his car. I think he lost a little motivation to finish it recently, which happens, but after rallying the little red truck he seems driven to finish his car! (Also, he came and towed me off the course that day once the motor quite)
Even though I shouldn't and I can't afford it, just getting back in the car for a few limited hours makes me want to start racing again. What a terrible drug. If you're around, I think we're racing the next ADRA race in mid May just outside of Wickenburg. Should be a good time, although I don't know if I'll get the old 1615 ready to race that soon.

The next ADRA race is at the park near Congress, correct? Too funny on Dave - he lived about 6-7 houses down on my street about a decade ago and I always saw him working on his car but didn't stop and introduce myself. We eventually met through a mutual friend that lived 35-40 miles from us! Hopefully this little drive gets him motivated again.

Funny how small the desert racing community is. People always resurface where you least expect them.
I'll let you know if Dave is going to race Congress. I hope everyone makes it up there. Being so close to Phoenix it should be a good time.
