RJ 77 engine swap ?

My goat herders truck is getting sick,

It had a dak dak donk on start up
once the oil gets round it goes away

Oil pressure was low so I fitted a new pump and seals.....dak dak dak is getting more regular and louder.

Oil pressure at idle did not improve.

The truck is very underpowered as is with this 22R engine...and I'm wondering about a engine swap rather than spend money on this clock work engine and still end up having to push it up hills.

Any one know of which toyo engines will fit with a little work ?

It basicly has a 5 speed gearbox and running gear out of a hilux only solid axle front and rear with coils on all corners

It does not look like a straight 6 cylinder will fit as this model has a cropped front end.

Is the 4 runner V6 a starter ? shorter in length and has more power than this tick tok, but would I need to change out the gearbox etc ?

Any aluminum in the oil?

The cam chain tensioner is oil pressure driven, if the pressure is low the tensioner may not be doing what it's supposed to be doing. I'm guessing that the noise is from the chain, but the problem is in the bearings. It may be worth putting in a set of bearings if the compression is good.

Yeah, that's kind of odd for a 22R. THat said, you can put about anything under the hood with enough work. They commonly put the Supra I6's in these older gen Toyotas with little to no trouble. BUT, even though it's underpowered it's hard to beat the 22R/E motors for reliability. what about a newer 89 22RE??? More power, direct drop in etc. For a farm truck it's a great motor that weon't let you down before the truck itself gives up the ghost...

went to the beach this weekend.....had to use first to get up some of the hill's......admitedly they were very steep and twisty- the vehicles in the canyons and the missing railings demonstrated that.

4000 rpm and first.....this thing was designed as a 10 seater......

Only had me the wife- who's only just heavier than the dog, my baby and our small trailer.

Why particularly supras ? rather than a standard toyo 4.5efi inline six ?

Or do the supra's have the same type of connection for the gearbox ?

Whoa, what truck is this in again??? I'm not following, but then I'm an idiot some tumes eh ;)

Well, here's my take on why the supra motor. There tends to be a HUGE aftermarket following for these cars all over the planet and they can be tuned to make some really serious horsepower. Like as in they've been making 1000hp out of Supra motor for the last 10 years. Add to that the fact that I belive some versions are somewhat shorter and it becomes possible to fit them into the relativly small Mini-truck engine bays.

Another thing is I don't think you find as many wrecked 80 series and motors in the yard, the nature of the Supra leds it's self to being driven in a way that can end in the junker eh ;) The 4.2 and 4.5 Cruiser motors and tranny's are just too long to go in without ALOT of "massaging" of the firewall etc. I am sure you could put one in, and I would LOVE to have the FZJ's 4.5 I6 in my much lighter 4Runner, but I'm betting it is a very very hard thing to do. And the biggest reason nobody does it... There's the 3.4L V6 that drops in with very little hassle and makes more than adaquate power in these older/smaller trucks. If we could get the D4D and the 1KZ-Te here at a reasonable cost I'm sure they would be popular to swap as well. It mostly comes down to length of the drivetrain. PLus if I'm not mistaken they quite a bit heavier as well. The drivetrain may not have been designed to handle it, but the I think that they and the frames are more than capable of taking the power although you'd probably want to go with an SFA here to get the bigger front diff if you were going to use it like it was ment to be used.

Gearboxes are different as well, but I think the supra used a version of the R series tranny??? or was it the W59 or soemthing? DaveInDenver should be able to tell us. We never got manual 80 series trucks here in teh states I don't belive so that limits the ammount of choices you have, and I'd never run an auto so that kind of put's the bigger 6 out of the running in this neck of the woods. Although I belive you could get the HS55 (??) or something that folks are running, but I don't know if it butt's up to the FJ/FZJ80 motors.

So lay it out for me as I'm apparently just not getting what is going on mate. What truck is this in? WHat motors do you have available (you're in Oman? so am I correct in assuming that you guys have alot of petrol motors and that the diesel's aren't as popular??) and what all do you do with the truck.

Cheers

You need to look on the aluminium pate on the firewall where it has the engine/gearbox/axle code.
Once you know which gearbox it has,it gets easier.

There is only a few of swaps i would consider.
1 1KZ T diesel from a 92 model on
2 A V6 GM engine from an Australian made Commodore(probably not availble to you)
3 A Toyota/Lexus V8

The latter 2 are commonly done in oz and there are off the shelf kits available.
Overheating is one of main headaches.

The V6 would be an improvement but I think it requires a gearbox swap(and so would the 1KZ T).

But I would rebuild the 22RE or buy another vehicle

OK so I have a G52 gearbox aka hilux...........what fits.....petrol wise.

I'm thinking 3ltrs> 6 cyliinders toyo's that either mate up exactly due to my location

or swap in a full engine- gearbox assembly

as "special parts" around here are few and far between...

I need a nuts- bolts- simple wiring and some welding- no fancy stuff

Locally we have hilux- Prado's-LC's etc

Can't find much info on the prados gear box's or the hilux's
