Anyone here have long term experience with this unit or its variants? If so how do you like or dislike it and why? I'm generally a fan of the domestic iron gear drive units for severe service as I've found they are pretty bulletproof as long they're kept full of lube, sealed and not abused beyond their rating but I have no experience with the T223.

I'm presently eyeballing a class 6 truck that has one with an eye towards purchasing it & would appreciate informed opinions as to whether the breed is worthy of a long term commitment or if I should look at its presence as a bargaining chip to dicker on the price a bit assuming I will be looking for an alternative at some point. For what it's worth, I am assuming it's going to need seals and bearings at a minimum just for my own peace of mind.

Your thoughts and opinions welcomed in Advance, thank you.

I was looking into converting my GMC6500 to 4wd for a while... I couldn't find anyone saying anything bad about the Rockwell cases used in medium duty trucks... I believe they are all gear drive units, and I'd wager that you'll twist the driveshafts off before you even come close to damaging the t-case. I had actually started thinking I'd use a NP203 if I could find a front axle, so I could have full time 4wd. The wheelbase on my truck is long enough that there would be some significant binding in turns with traditional locked 4wd, and I wanted 4wd for plowing, so it would certainly be turning at times. Ended up just chaining up the rear axle and dropping a couple thousand pounds of gravel at the tailgate. She moves whatever is in front of her now. :)

Good luck with your quest!!

Thank you for your responses gentlemen, they are appreciated and my definite bad for not rendering this thread null when it became pointless. My apologies as well.

Events transpired shortly after making this thread that rendered the question moot which is to say, the owner of the 1985 Ford F750 4x4 chassis/cab unit with this T-case with whom I was negotiating would not agree to a commercial third party escrow service even though I was willing to meet his asking price and prepay the shipping. Not a negotiable point from my perspective as I would have been buying the vehicle across state lines sight unseen and wanted at least a neutral third party involved if things went wrong and worst case would have cost him very little other than being unavailable for other prospective buyers for three days tops.

Here are a couple pics of the 'one that got away' if anyone is curious:
