ROOF RACK HOMEGROWN

Since I have had a few questions on my roof rack I decided to put up a little post with some pics. Its basically a lowes steel fence panel with 4 support bars (fence post) for that fence. Take existing hardware out of roof and buy longer bolts. Pretty easy stuff and should be right around $100. I use mine quite often and love it. It can haul a lot of cargo up there. This is just the first stage of it. I'll probably mount a few lights up there and maybe side rails who knows. Enjoy.

Nice. I've used the same fence post material for a bike rack I built. If you live in a rust prone area you might want to consider trying to paint or coat the inside of the posts as they rust really easily. The metal is thin enough it could rust from the inside out.

Yep I need to paint the bolts and the inside. I live in OK so not really rust prone but traveled to MO in the snow a few times this year. They salt the roads there so that is probably where the rust came from. I forgot to mention you have to cut the feet off the fence post and then you just have square tubes like shown.

The bolt in the second pic is looking straight down. You take the factory bolt out (torx head if i remember right) and take that screw to lowes. see what kind of thread it is and just buy a longer bolt to put right back in factory location. Its longer b/c it has to grab the fence post. Drill a big hole in the top of the fence post so you can fit a socket over the bolt.
