RTT on a Discovery 2?

Hi. I am looking for suggestions for mounting an RTT to a Discovery 2.
I would like to go with the most simple and inexpensive option. If the factory roof bars are strong enough I could mount cross bars to those and the tent to the bars. Anybody know about this?

As I understand, another option would be to get Thule Superhigh rain gutter mounts and go that route. My main question with that option is if two bars, 4 feet, would have enough strength to handle the job and if most RTT's have the capacity to mount to 3 bars. I am looking at a two person RTT.

Any help regarding those options, or any other ideas, would be great.

I am pretty new to the forum, lurked a bit, and appreciate all the community here offers.

This is Larry from Columbia Rovers (lwg on here).

If you go to the camping section and do a search for RTT, there are a ton of resources and pictures available.

Welcome to the board.

Rtt

I just helped a good friend this weekend install a Howling Moon three man on his Disco. First of all - what an RTT. This thing is so well built but I digress.
I would not use the disco's factory rack. I would purchase an independeant-Yakima or Thule or other rack that has risers. "and no matter what-make sure you have risers on it". If not no matter how good the install kits that the tent has, you will be screaming bloody murder through frustration and end up damaging either the tent or vehicle. Good Luck.

I have a Maggiolina roof tent on my Disco, and went with three Thule bars with gutter mounts, this choice based solely on gut feeling. Two bars may be sufficient, but the GRP on the tent flexes a bit, so I and a mate pitched in on a set of bars (they come in pairs) so we had three each.

I know I have seen the RTT mounted to the OEM roof bars, but I would think that you get a ton of wind noise. I have mine on the four feet, and I have had a Autohome on them too.

-I agree about the wind noise, probably quite loud if mounted up front. Along those lines, I did see a D2 today with bars that are mounted in the same place as the OEM bars, but they were much beefier, like the bars on an Xterra or something. Anybody know about those?

I'll keep my eye out for some used gutter mounts. I am not gonna buy 4 total bars, 8 total feet, new, it would be about 600 bucks I think.

Anybody know if I can just buy some steel rods to use as crossbars instead of the Thule ones ($$)?

Thanks for all of the ideas and input from everyone.

I am pretty sure those are made by Thule also. They are like the same thing as something you would put on a volvo wagon.

Sounds to me like you saw a standard 04 Discovery. They have 2.5" round tubes from the factory.

Have you looked into Yakima?

1A HIRISE Tower - set of 4 @ 159.00

58" Crossbar - set of 2 @ 70.00

Double that up and your cost is 458.00

You could also trim the spacer on the tower to make it sit closer to
the roof line.

I have used a similar set up on a Montero (didn't double up), carried 6 mountian bikes without any problems.
