Hey all,
I have been running a small tablet PC with XP Tablet Edition and TOPO! for a few years now. It has been a great unit considering it wasn't built for the field, but is starting to show its age. It is slower (800Mhz Transmeta Crusoe processor) and has less memory, but worked well for mapping.
Just purchased a previous-generation Itronix IX325 tablet off ebay. An outfit called Dealtree Auctions will put a batch up every month or two. They are going for better rates than I've been seeing all year. A decked out one has been going for $900ish. Mine was just over six and had nearly all features usually seen.
The auctions run between the extremes of:
refurb/1-1.25GB RAM/40GB disk/802.11b-g/bluetooth/GPS/full software+recovery partition (900-1000ish)
used-as-is/500-700GB RAM/40GB/missing some software (400-600ish)
factory spec sheet: http://www.gd-itronix.com/upload/specifications/us/duo-touch.pdf
as purchased specs:
- factory refurbished
- 1GB RAM
- wireless 802.11b/g
- 40GB disk
- OS/bundled software installed, OS restoration partition
I like the touchscreen and compact flash slot features- my camera uses CF. Will likely max the RAM and get a bigger hard drive. The small form factor of these tablets keeps them out of the way. I have a RAM mount system built to hold the tablet between the rear-view mirror and dash in the land cruiser (off-road use only). The mount lets me move it in any direction and also holds a Garmin GPSIII+. I might get a 60csx with the money I expected to spend on this tablet.
The old tablet's integrated/removable vinyl case/keyboard may be missed, but I didn't find myself using a keyboard much at all on the road.
