Safari Snorkel

The D1 I bought last week has a partially installed Safari Snorkel, basically everything outside of the engine bay is there, everything from on the inside of the engine bay is missing.

When I bought the truck it had an inline type K&N filter and some dryer tubing connecting to the snorkel outlet in the fender wall...the MAF was just flopping about and it wasnt sealed at all, needless to say that lasted a day. I ordered a stock airbox from www.roverguy.com and installed it on Tuesday. I would like to plumb the snorkel into it somehow.

I emailed ARB to see if I could buy just the missing parts and unfortunatly they are not avaialble so its up to me to custom fab something and I was wondering if anyone had done something similar, and if they would'nt mind sharing some pictures or ideas. Thanks!

You could try and find some tubing that is similar and then using rubber/poly connectors, mate everything together. I have also seen a few people home build snorkels out of PVC. Making a mount for the MAF will take some definite fabbing.

Have any pictures of from where the snorkel ends, the air box, and to where you want to go?

Well I would like to plumb it into the stock airbox, which on the D1 provides the support for the MAF.

This is how it was, I removed the K&N filter and dryer hose stuff. I basically need to go from the redcoupler, to the stock airbox somehow

How it is now with the stock airbox

Is there enough room to connect to the box from behind where the red coupler is? You could then seal the front of the box.

That's a retarded spot for the snorkel to enter the engine compartment.

Can you cut the horn off and run a hose from the remaining pipe back to the red coupler? Cutting another hole in the air box seems wrong to me. Any way to rotate the box 90 degrees?

I was thinking he could cut a hole in the back, run a short piece to the box (seal it up) then cut/seal the front. A tube from the back to the front would be hard and have a bunch of twist and turns.

I can take pictures of my installation if you think it would help to see a DII with the complete ARB kit.

IIRC, to do the install how it was intended you have to cap the front horn, holesaw the side of the airbox, rivet and seal a metal flange to the side of the airbox, cut a section out of the intake hose, and move the airbox back using a special bracket. The tech support at ARB is top notch and has never done me wrong. Contact them and ask them to email or fax a copy of the directions to you. Obtaining directions will be a huge help.

I can snap some pics of my DI snorkel when I get a chance. The combination of the directions and pics should give you a better understanding of what this endeavor entails.

I do seem to remember reading their instructions online that you have to move it back a bit. Looking forward to seeing those pics!

X1000, ARB is one great company...

I've delt with them numerous times both here in the US through their Seattle office/shop and In Australia both directly @ the factory... (Yep it was pretty freakin awsome) And over one really bad telephone connection in the middle of a huge storm. EVERY single person I've ever delt with was just top notch and they really stand behind the products they sell/make. We had a freak dual locker failure on our 70series Ute that we needed to ferry a bunch of people across multiple flooded bridges and they got us back on the road in very little time by giving us great technical info and really showed how familliar they are with their products. I can't say enough good about this comapany wich is rare to say about a company that big eh.

Cheers

Dave
