Saltwater Engel

I'm considering using my Engel 45 on a sailing trip on the FL Gulf Coast. Concerned with the saltwater tearing it up though. Anyone have experience with the corrosion resistance of the Engel? Thanks

Pull the outer shell off and paint any bare metal you see. Add dielectic grease to all of the open electric connections. Just my 2 cents worth.
Used to do the same stuff for a lot of my gear when I lived on a boat in San Diego. Learned the hard way.

Or wait for the new "Marine" inspired Engel to debut... it should be available in May/June, with plastice replacing alot of the metal shell of the older generation.

Engel fridges were used by the sailing community long before the 4X4 and Expedition crowds started to use them. All the metal surfaces seem to be coated. The worst you would get would be an exterior build up of salts I would think.

Or look into getting a Waeco.

This is an Engel from 1975 - and worked on a sailboat for 28 years.

Agreed, but according to Paul and Engel the new 40 unit is designed to prevent such problems. I'm not near an ocean, so none of my customers have had any sort of corrosion issues :D

Yeah, there isn't much that salt is going to do to plastic, that's for sure. But I never heard of a portable fridge going bad from salt air either, and I spent part of my adventuring youth doing yacht deliveries and crewing.

Total submersion is an other story, but it never stopped them for working.

Ummm...Kurt I hate to point out when someone is wrong. You are indeed near an ocean...America's Inland Sea is also known as the Great Salt Lake.

I've been using my Engel's out there for years, and although I'm not actually *on* the lake, I'm really close to it and the truck gets blasted with sea foam quite a bit. Fridge has had no problems and no contact with salt, so it may be a stretch to compare the two working conditions.

Duely noted Michael, I seem to forget about that great lake all too often  The thing about the GSL as well as the surrounding desert is the concentration of the salt, insanely high. And if anyone would know about the effects of being in the area... it would be you

Hey when are we going to get together and have lunch? I'm in Riverton. I can stare at Sandy from my front porch.

There is a thread on the 40 with all the specs on it somewhere.
