Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (8.0)

No, the Costco link is to the 8 inch Galaxy Note. That's the expensive tablet with support of a stylus. It takes a special genius for marketing to create two eight inch tablets and call them both "Galaxy" even the two are quite different in price and specs

My lady and I were just going through this today and looking at Garmin's at best buy. i wisely decided to look a few things up on the EXPO, thankfully i didnt buy!

So based on this info, im definitely interested in the Tab3's. Would some of you gents be willing to point me to some links to learn more on the software side for the Tab3? Needing it to be able to run Forest Service roads and such. Im real new to this whole side of things. also links to preferred mounts and ways of power source hook up would be much appreciated!

If it matters, will be mounting into a 2011 Xterra, no portability necessary.

Thanx for all the homework!

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 models, in 7 inch, 8 inch and 10 inch sizes, are now available from USA retailers. Each model has its advantages. I like the 8 inch model. See the first page of the thread for reasons why.

As far as software is concerned, the Tab 3 models run the same software as the Tab 2 models that several members have reported using successfully for navigation off the grid.

here's one thread that talks about the Tab 2 and navigation software

I haven't played with the GPS function much as I need some software but one thing I will say is that Samsung changed not only the size, but also the plug on this one so there is basically nothing as far as accessories out for it yet. Given the popularity of their other products I sure they will be forthcoming quickly though. So far it seems fast and the screen colors are very good; if you've used their other tablets or phones everything should be pretty familiar.

I have the Ram suction mounts, and they work pretty well. There are a variety of options and shapes and sizes, and they are super customizable. Kinda pricey, but I've been very happy with them.

For power, I just use a standard 2amp USB plugged into the outlet in the truck. I bought an extra cable for the truck, though.

For apps - I really like Back Country Navigator for topo. Co-Pilot is pretty good for a turn by turn GPS app. PDFMaps can take MVUM in pdf format and use the GPS to pin point where you are. Doesn't always work, but when it does it is awesome. EveryTrail lets you download routes and pictures, and then you can import the routes into the GPS program of your choice.

If you get a bluetooth OBD-II reader, you can use Torque App to monitor your engine data (mileage, oil temps, etc.)

I've found that using my smartphone and a tablet is super handy, so now I run both.

That should get you started.

How is everyone liking their Tab 3 8"?
The 8" doesn't have USB host does it? Meaning you can't hook up a camera and download pics to it as is advertised with the 10".
