Satellite Internet Apps - what new apps do you want or need?

I'd love an email app. Do you have a hardware platform you are working with. We'll need some type of mobile Sat device. I'm looking at the new Exceed service from Viasat. It's only a year or before it's affordable for us mobile folk. Then it's direct laptop to www!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "the regular app" so if you can clarify that I would appreciate it.

OneMail is a new product that was designed to address the ability to access your actual email account directly on your smartphone/tablet via a low bandwidth satellite phone. A data call on an Iridium handheld phone or GO runs at about 2.4k, therefore loading a web mail site or standard email client is impossible. Even with Globalstar at 9.6k, this is a challenge, and the IsatPhone is the slowest of the bunch at about 1.2k. OneMail is compatible with all of the phones and accesses your gmail account in a very optimized way. It only downloads the headers of new emails initially which requires very little overhead, but then allows you to pick and choose which emails to actually download. The app automatically initiates and ends the data call on the sat phone as soon as it is done downloading/uploading, so the airtime used for this process is minimal. Right now, it will only work with gmail, but in the near future it will expand to many other email providers. Even if you don't have a gmail account, you can still make use of the app by starting a gmail account and auto-forwarding from your regular account to that account while you are out in the field. Eventually, the app will be comprehensive enough to access nearly any type of account directly.

For anyone interested, the OneMail email app now supports sending photos directly from your smartphone and it highly compresses it but maintains a reasonably high image quality. On an Iridium handheld or GO it takes about 3 minutes to transfer an 853x640 pixel image, whereas in the raw iphone format, it would take app. 145 minutes. Globalstar would be 3-4 times faster.
