Well I haven't made much progress on my other trailer project (1/2 a TJ tub) lately so I thought I might tackle a less complex build. It all started when I found an almost new 3500# boat trailer torsion axle for $60 and couldn't resist buying it. Plus I was stuck at home for the day while I was keeping an eye on the contractors blowing in insulation in my attic (you'll see some of their weird equipment in the pictures).
I was able to knock out the frame in an afternoon. I still have to add the box and fenders, but I'll tackle that this weekend.
Basic spec's:
Shortened 3500# axle, ~62" WMS to WMS (close to the same as a Jeep)
30" tires on stock Jeep wheels
5' X 4' X 20" box with ~5' tongue for additional storage
Combination of 11 and 14 gage steel for light weight.
Shortened axle, now with better clearance
Main frame done
Mounting axle
Now a rolling frame
I'm a bit concerned that the tongue may be too long, but I'd hate for this thing to track funny. I plan to mount a spare in front of the box and a tongue box in front of that so maybe it won't look so weird once they are in place.
