Screaching CB

Hey everyone,

I buddy hooked up my CB unit that was in my old truck and when I go to use it it squeals or screaches when I transmit.
My buddy hooked it up for me while I was busy doing other things so I will double check that first and the only thing that has change from the old setup is a new cable from the cb to the antenna.
When I do transmit it also makes the same noise on the receiving cb.
Can some one point me in the right direction as to were to first start looking for the problem.
I will also be putting a SWR meter on it to check that as well.

Thanks in advance

Christopher

Perfect time to ask! My friends CB has been doing that for MONTHS. If you have a mic gain, having that set too high will cause the squeal you refer to. That's the most common cause I think. However, a poor ground may cause similar problems as we just learned. My buddies antenna was mounted to his tool box, which had a very poor connection to the frame/ground. When we moved the antenna to the side of his bed, the squeal went away, and he now as incredible range (talking to truckers on the interstate probably 50mi away.) I think having too tight of a kink in the coax may cause the same problems? Not sure on that one. Hope this helps out some!

yeap. Bad ground or bad mic. I have an elcheapo radio shack CB unit in my Jeep and the mic went bad. They don't sell replacement mic's but the CB is so cute and small and otherwise works well, so I bought another CB unit and swapped it out. Squeal gone.

Does the screeching occur when the engine is runnig or not running? Ignition on or off? Provide some more details, and maybe someone can help out.

Sorry about that, It does it with engine on and off and the unit is wired hot all the time.

I just talked to another guy about it and he said the same thing that it is more than likely a bad ground so I'm going to start there and see what happens.

Keep you posted.

Try using a bolt that is holding your passenger seat to the floor.

I've had good luck doing this for years.

good luck!

I am pretty sure it's the mic. Do the easy stuff first.

First check the connections between the mic and the transceiver to ensure they are clean. Then take the mic out of your friends CB and plug it into yours and try transmitting (he won't need a mic to receive your signal).

If the noise is gone it's your mic. If it's not gone check the grounds.
