Sort of a cool project here.
1972 Series IIA original owner gave it to the son who is now mid 40s...(so am I
)
The goal was to not use a drop down gate, to have a swing out door. to have the spare tire on the rear securely, no rear bumper could be added and he also wanted a removable bike rack on the tire and he wanted it to look as original as possible, even down to the paintwork!
We measured and cut the rear door down. We got a Mantec swing out carrier and a new set of hinges. We fitted the door and had to remove the cap on the PS rear corner to mount the carrier. Once the carrier was on straight we had to make sure the door would fit then we drilled the upper hinge mount and used the lower original hinge mount. I opens like butter!
To top it off we took a section of door cap from one of our parts series trucks that had the same sort of age and carefully fitted it onto the top of the cut down door secured with a few tack welds cleaned up with galvanizing paint.
The Thule bike rack pops on/off in about a minute.
Overall a pretty sweet mod that greatly increases the usability of the back end of the truck.
