Expedition Leader
My wife and I wheeled from Gateway, CO up Sheep Creek, down to Granite Creek via the Steamboat Mesa Road, and then northward and eastward back to Grand Junction, Co via the Granite Creek Road, Ryan Creek Road, and DS road. All of this was in the scenic Dolores Triangle most of which lies in Utah. This is an extremely scenic route with numerous great canyon, mesa, Dolores River, and La Sal mountains views. We took some scenic side trails once up Sheep Creek Canyon which included great views northward into Ryan park and in the Book Cliffs in the far hazy distance, westward towards the Top-of-the-World ridge, and southward back down Dolores River towards The Palisades near Gateway. Also took a trail westward on the south side of Steamboat Mesa to wonderful overlooks of the Dolores River. Looked at an old maybe wagon route just on the north side of Granite Creek along the Granite Creek Road. Then stopped and looked at the Big Triangle including my wife scrambling on the side over the sandstone. Conditions were hot, windy and very dry. A few wildflowers were seen but they were small and drought ridden.
