Shifting Gear

Shifting gear... new to ExPo as I'm prepping out my Gen III for overlanding. We're avid moto-tourers/campers, ocean kayakers as well, but are to the point of wanting to overnight a bit more comfortably than with what can be ported on my CBR 1100 XX or a pair of kayaks.

We live in Southern Utah surrounded by enough overland opportunities to keep us busy the rest of our lives, not to mention a dream tour to Patagonia. Pictured above is 35 miles from my home.

This is my second Monty, an '03 with a widened track thanks to H&R spacers, and Cooper Discoverer 265/70's. Looking for a mild lift and to engineer for pressurized hot water, upgrade electrical and add a rooftop tent.

Anyone interested in establishing a Utah ExPo Chapter? With all the off-roading here, I was surprised that a chapter has yet to be organized.

Cheers

It's a nice looking rig. I plan on picking up a Gen III in few years when my Gen II.5 gets a few more miles. Currently I only have 29K on my 2000 Monty so I may be 2-3 years out but I am already collecting parts for it.

I would be interested in creating a Utah expedition chapter. I know there is a lot of interest and people would definitely participate, but I personally like to wheel in very small groups. I just like to get away from people and avoid the crowds. By wheeling in large groups it is counter productive to my goals of getting away from it all.

Once you guys get a local group together would you be interested in hosting a Moab trip? By hosting, I mean basic planning and organizing things that cant be done remotely like knowing where a good campground is near the trails.:ylsmoke:

I have no problem hosting an event but Moab is not very overland friendly when it comes to wheeling. I would much rather spend time wheeling the San Rafael Swell or the Bir Trail and Hole in the Rock. The terrain is very similar to Moab, but you avoid the zoo like atmosphere that comes with Moab. A good option would be to host an event where we have a day at Moab where we do a classic trail like Hell's Revenge or Kane Creek, then we could go over to the San Rafael Swell and do some overlanding for a few days.

I agree. Moab is the Disneyland of red rock and anyone with a knobby or two is making a go of it. I love the town, but if you're wanting to get away from the mob (and I'm into small groups as well), there's plenty out here to feel more isolated and challenged.
