Shocks

Time for new shocks on my XJ. Used mostly as a DD/camping rig and very mild trail use. Running 4.5" lift and 33" tires. Any suggestions. Looked at several brands. Lots of choices between Hydro and Nitro. Running BDS 5500 Hydros now, There 5 years old and are starting to leak.

I'm running Bilstien 5100's on my JKU and couldn't be happier. Weight between rigs might not be too different. I haven't gotten around to weighing mine but I eatimate I've carrying a total weight of +/-5500lbs through hunting season.

Bilstein 5100/5150's are the best bang for the buck IMO. Get the best shocks you can afford.

I run 10" travel Bilstein 5150's with BPE's and the pinto eye adapter at the top. They need a bit of bumpstopping so they dont top out but it suits my as I run 35's anyway. Nice shock, firm enough that it handles quite well for a lifted XJ but soft enough to work well offroad.

You can see they mount quite low with the pin to eye adapters in there.

I'll just pipe up and say that I think that the Edelbrock IAS extreme is a better performing shock than the Bilstiens. I drive a JKU, and went from IAS to the Bilstien 5100's when the IAS's started to leak. This is the problem I have with the Edelbrocks. I've had them on three different Jeeps(TJ, WJ, and JK) and I've had leakage from 3 of the 12 shocks.
I'd gladly sell the 5100's for $.75 on the dollar as I feel they are too soft. Granted, they are on a JKU, not an XJ so take this all with the amount of salt you feel appropriate.
