I like the looks of a 2014 chevy short bed truck4x4,1500,deciding on the v6 or the v8.I travel a lot and hunt and fish and wondering if this short bed will be ok for a slide in camper if I buy one. What do you think about the truck.

I really like the new chevy's, especially now that the extra cab has the normal opening doors. If you're thinking of towing or hauling a camper, I'd get the V8 for sure. The new V6's do well with empty driving or light loads, but I bet with any significant load the V8 will be much better to drive and probably get better mileage too.

- just looked it up, based on the 1mpg difference between the V6 and 5.3 V8, I'd definitely go V8.

What do you me by the extra cab,you are right, the v8 is the one to buy

Gm uses 3 cab configurations, regular cab, extra cab (guess they call it a double cab now), and crew cab. In the past the extra cab had the rear door that opened suicide style, with the hinges on the back of the cab. It works well enough until you end up in a parking lot next to a car, and then you have to do a ridiculous shuffle to try to get anyone out of the back seat. A big reason I went with my Toyota Tundra Doublecab was the normal front hinged rear doors, which wasn't available from GM or Ford at the time.

The engine won't make much difference with any camper that truck can carry. A 1500 usually has only around 1,500 pounds of payload. If you really want a TC I'd be looking for a 2500 truck. I know that means you need the ext. cab to get a short bed but it will be a much better camper hauling platform.
I've carried a small pop-up TC on a Dodge1500 short bed and it was overweight with no passengers or gear in the camper.
TCs get heavy in a hurry with options, water, propane, food, etc.

Yeah... Truck camper pretty much = 3/4 ton truck at a minimum. And then only if it's a smaller model or pop-up etc. The multi-slide-out basement model behemoths really require an F-450 to get the required GVW capacity.
