Should I do this... or just buy a truck tent?

Hi everyone!

I'm in Europe and this is my truck - a 2015 Toyota Hilux.
2.5L... pretty basic... but very reliable.

This summer I want to turn the back cab into a camper... as it's a double cab and I have to sleep sidewards in it usually.

I was watching this video where Brian has a solution. He creates a wooden frame bed extender that pulls out and rests on the tailgate.

However I was thinking of getting a bed slider like one of these below - and build a similar (but steel) frame on the bed extender.
When the bed slider is pulled out I would put a removable floor down deeper into the cab so it's all level. I would remove the black side walls.
It has a 300kg payload. But I presume that's spread evenly over the unit. It's made by carryboy.

Can anyone advise if this is a good/bad idea?
A lot of work I know... but I want something that is strong.
Looking to get advice or a reality check if possible.

I want something safe/secure... but there is a part of me thinking I should just get a truck tent and stop over complicating it?

Thanks!

Great idea, especially starting with a commercial sliding platform. Make sure the black sidewalls are not structural.
Me, I'd eliminate the canopy or slice the canopy to extend with the slider so the sleeper volume could be bigger but overall, you have a great concept.

2.5L..... the guys in North America will be shaking their heads.

i've entertained similar ideas (to the video) but never considered your option. kudos for imagineering!

the next bugaboo will be the joint between slide out & cap in the event of rain.

all i have ever thought was a fabric gasket attached with an over lapping slide, but then overthought myself into seeking another solution. if you can sew, or have access to an untemperamental sail maker, i can see it being able to work well in four seasons.
