Hey all I have a question for you all. I have this odd sound that comes when I shift from park to reverse or neutral to reverse. Sometimes it will do it shifting into drive. It does not make the sound when accelerating, decelerating, or stopping. It only makes the noise when shifting. The clunk is not that big a deal to me as it is what I am used to. It is the crackish sound that I am unsure of. If anyone has any ideas of what it could be that would be great.
Here is a video I made with my phone last night when I got off work real quick. There is pretty much no video because of how dark it was, but you should be able to hear the noise easily.
I snuck out of work for a couple minutes and crawled under my truck to check the slip yoke, and the u joints. I am by no means a mechanic, but I think I checked it all ok. I grabbed the driveshaft right next to the u joint at the rear axle. There was no play in the u joint. I stuck my fingers in further and there was no play. I did the same thing to the u joint right behind the transfer case. Same result. No play in the u joint. There is a little bit of surface rust on both of the u joints, and they were dry of any grease.
I also pushed up on the bottom of the slip yoke. It moved maybe 1mm at most where it connects to the transfer case. One thing I did notice, and I don't know if this is normal, is that If I pushed up on the slip yoke the transfer case itself moved a little. Not a lot, but a little. I'm not sure if this helps figure out the problem or not, but it may be something.
I forgot to mention this, and it may be helpful. Everything was working fine until the other day I was trying to put a TV antenna out of the ground with my truck. I put it in 4 low, and crawled until there was tension in the tow strap. As soon as the truck would spin tires I would hit the brakes so not to stress anything. I have pulled a lot of things out like this before, and I had no problems, but I guess I should bring that to light as it may help diagnose.
It is a 2003 Silverado ECSB.
