Skamper Repair in Los Angeles

Hi Everyone, I have a 1989 Skamper 072S pop up truck camper that I am re-doing. The lift system is a bit torked at the rear corners and I would like to find an RV repairperson in Los Angeles, CA who knows something about the lift mechanism on Skampers. Does anyone know of a knowledgeable repairperson in Los Angeles? Or has anyone repaired their Skamper lift system and would like to get paid to repair mine?

Thanks a lot,
Claire

Lots of info and pictures of that lift system and its repair on it. I'm pretty sure it has the HECO system. Look for roof rebuild threads. There's a good thread which shows how a guy put a piece of aluminum plate on the inside across the whole back and bolted the brackets to that plate in order to stop the twisting that typically occurs.

Thank You

Hi Kerry, Thank you for the quick response. I am pretty sure I have the Heco lift system. I did use metal plates, but not an angle iron. My system isn't too torked and the wood has not rotted. The problem is that there is a bolt on the end of the metal pipe that is part of the lift system. The L-bracket that fits in the corner has a large nut that pairs up with the bolt inside the pipe. When I fit the L-bracket on the bolt, the bracket angles upward instead of at 90 degrees. I cannot get the bolt in the pipe to move at all. The L-bracket will push its way through the roof when closing the roof causes too much tension on the bracket. I cut the top off the L-bracket but that wasn't really the answer. I am pretty sick of the whole bracket repair.
Thanks, for your help. I plan to look in detail at all those photos you directed me to and read more posts of what other people have done.

There's a torsion bar inside that tube, I'm pretty sure that nut is a part of it. I believe the reason its hard to turn is that it's twisting and holding that torsion bar in place. You could probably get that bracket to turn down if you could get 4 or 5 feet of leverage on the torsion bar. I'm pretty sure there's an account in here or elsewhere on the internet of someone who did away with the torsion component of the lift system. I believe that person had the roof completely off to do that. Post up some pictures if you can so that people can give more direct advice.
