Sleeping platforms within a "teardrop" style

Hello all-

Currently in the process of designing a teardrop style offroad trailer. Basically, an enclosed sleeping space. We're building it to accommodate a full/double size mattress, but it would be great to be able to fold up the mattress in a way use the space for gear. Perhaps even have the mattress reside on a platform which covers up gear so you don't have to actually unpack. Note that by "mattress" I mean either a real mattress or some form of comfortable bedding support. In an old camper I had, there was a bench where the backrest flipped over into a bed with storage underneath. The downside of that is that the "mattress" was the couch cushions of custom size- its much easier to buy a 4-5" thick foam mattress (custom cushions is a PITA and probably expensive).

So, anyone done something like this before? Any ideas? Am I making any sense? Thanks!

There is a build on the tnttt site that has a basement under the sleeping floor. I believe it might be called the Desert something or another

That's a pretty neat mattress. Thanks for posting the link.

I have to wonder just how nice it is though, being just 4" thick.

None of us are getting any younger. I've found the best mattress for most campers, even truck campers, to be isolated coil futon mattresses.

They are similar to that 4" foam one linked above, in that they are essentially multiple pieces with fabric that join them and allow them to bend lengthwise.

Biggest difference is that they are real mattresses offering real support.

Pretty sure they would work well for a trailer, assuming you treat the bed as a futon. Would make for easy changes from bed to couch :ylsmoke:

jonesw3- excellent! Thanks for sharing. This is the sort of thing I'm pondering. Mind if I ask how long your interior is? Actually, do you have a build thread? That is very close to what I have planned.
