Smittybilt XRC8 winch? Experiences?

While generally not my first choice in suppliers, I do receive the 4WheelParts emails. They've got the XRC8 on sale right now for $299.95 with free shipping. Deal is almost too good to pass up. I know Wen had this winch on her Xterra, anybody else have any experiences? I'd love to know what you think about it. Speed isn't really crucial, but I don't want to wait for so long that a snail could have pulled me out faster. LOL

I have one and use it a lot, it is definatly not as fast as the high end Warn, but it is 1/3 the price and I am not in a hurry!!! I also have a MileMarker 8K and have had good luck with that too. We are actually considering the XRC10 to the Wifes F250 as it is a recovery rig.

Go for it!!

There was a huge thread on Pirate4x4.com about those winches. It is in the General 4x4 section. Sorry I don't have the link. Only complaint I remember is that is it a little slow and everyone recommends replacing the cable that it comes with. The 10k is even better from what I can tell.

The new ones have a 5.5hp motor, just like the 10k. the gear redoction is only like 172-175 to one so they are a bunch faster than the older ones. The thing that I did not like about it was the size of the control box, it is huge. The only other thing that I needed to do was to make up three new power leads. I just used 2g from a welding supply shop, $2.50 per foot but it was worth it to move the control box under the hood.

So true... The box is 3/4 size larger than the solenoid itself, the solenoid on the inside is 1/4 the size... We took ours apart and mount it on the cross member near the radiator, re-route your plug to where you want it and your good to go.

Here's the Solenoid:

I have one and just installed it. Haven't used it yet "for real" though. My only complaint was that the instructions for "clocking" the housing for the free-spool lever and the exploded drawing included with the winch didn't match the machine sitting in front of me:oops: . I had to call tech support for correct instructions. They were VERY helpful (and apologetic for the problem, a rarity) and with their phone instructions I was easily able to "clock" the housing.

Overall satisfied so far, and I got a much better deal through winchdepot.com who were running a sale, but now their site lists the same price as 4wheelparts. I did a quick Google search and the lowest price they show is $284.99 from an outfit called oconeeoffroad.com.

Am I reading the one photo correctly? Does it say "Mile Marker" on the cable?

I just got back (literally) from a 3 day wheeling/camping trip in France with a local German Off-road club. My wife and I were with 6 other vehicles, none of which were well equiped, and most had street tires (Their idea of "off-road capable" and mine were not exactly the same, but thats another story)

Anyway, the place we were at was a huge farm, all natural terrain with big hill climbs, tons of mud and water, and deep ruts from over use. I had the only winch in the group, and let me tell you it got a work out this weekend. I made 14 full-on recovery pulls (some straight, some with every peice of recovery gear I had, multiple blocks etc.) this weekend with my Smittybuilt XRC8, and it didnt hick-up at all. Yes, it is slow, but it works great. I have had mine completely under water and mud many times, amd it still works flawlessly. The only thing I have done to the winch is replace all of the screws/bolts with stainless steel, because the stock ones rust very quickly.

I am buying a 10,000 for the front of my truck, and will put this 8000 on the rear. I have made about 25 pulls total with mine, and some of them were pretty hairy situations, any one of them have easily made this purchase worth every penny. Except for speed, I will put it next to a Warn 8000 pound winch any day. I have used both, and there aint that much difference.

You will have many nay-sayers, Warn this, Warn that, but for the price, you wont find a better deal.

We got one for my sons TJ. It worked just fine the 3 times we needed it. Shortly after the purchase his Jeep was stolen. I am sure it is still working fine though. :clapsmile For the price how can you go wrong? If in not mistaken they are calling that price an introductry price. I have no idea how long they will stay that low.

how bad an idea would it be to put this thing on a 5k lb full size beast? it would be used almost exclusively for self-extraction, very rarely at that.

should I just bite the bullet and go 10k lb for another $200?

:D

I've bookmarked this page for a rainy day in 10-15 years, we'll see how the two are working then. Even if the M8000 isn't, its warranty will ensure it will ;)

I wouldn't say I am bias, mabey a bit skeptical... I'm at a winch repair facility a couple times a month or more here in SLC, piles of all the Chinese import stuff in all sorts of disrepair. The winch guru's there are not wheelers, but they have nothing good to say about the quality of the internals on many of the import products. Oh, and they stock every spare I could ever need for a Warn, enough to convince me :D

If its not in the budget to get a higher quality winch, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Milemarker, Ramsey or Champion, just take it for face value. There are plenty getting excellent results for their money in these cases.
