snorkel setup for a 2.7L 4cyl 96 4runner

ok, so I've been trying to figure out what exactly I need to do to be able to put a snorkel on my 4runner but no one (that I've talked to) seems to know exactly, but they tell me I have to take some intake parts from a tacoma and mount them on my 4runner for it to work.
Does anyone have any specifics or any links to write ups on this?
I've been looking and haven't found anything with details.
I would greatly appreciate any help, thanks!

Im not sure how much different the snorkel is between the 2.7 and 3.4 but on mine(3.4) I had to get the tacoma intake tube to make it work. Its just the black tube that runs inside the fender. Cheap to pickup from the junkyard. The junkyard local to me actually just gave me the piece.

Does your intake extend into the front passenger side body panel?

If so, then you are in good shape. Go get a Taco tube and snorkel, and install.

Many people ditch the power antenna when they install the snorkel, but it is possible to keep it, although I have not found anyone besides myself who still has theirs!

Good luck.

I have a k&n intake on it right now, bought it that way so I don't have any factory intake parts...I guess I'll need some of that stuff too. do you have any pics of your setup under the hood?

Hang on... I'll go snap one for ya!

You will need to re-install the factory airbox... best best is to keep an eye out on t4r.org or yotatech.com

a quick search turned this up:

EDIT: These are for V6 engines. Make sure you find one for a 4 banger! Sorry, its late, and my brain is fried from studying.

Hopefully you can find a used one that is cleaner than mine! :sombrero:

As you can see, (I'll travel backwards from the engine), the intake tube goes from the engine, through a small intake muffler (you may opt to use an airraid tube instead for better airflow), to the factory airbox and exits the engine bay into the front quarter panel. In stock configuration it ends there after a short tube. In Tacomas, this tube extends much further back... to the place where the snorkel is to be mounted, near the rear of the quarter panel.

Of course, my truck has a V6, but as long as the airbox draws from the same area, then the snorkel will work (which I'm sure it does). The only tricky part for you will be to find a stock airbox from a 4 banger.

Jacque at TRDPARTS4U can quote you one... or at least help you find part numbers.

Thanks! That helps a lot! Now I have a grasp of what I'm dealing with. I'll call the salvage yards tomorrow.

Make sure you get a intake/airbox from a 4cyl rig as they are different from the V6 rigs. The intake tube inside the fender should be the same on both rigs though.

EDIT: I reread the thread and it looks like I'm the third person to post this! My bad. Try http://www.car-part.com/ to search the wrecking yards around your area.

Fwiw the Tacoma intake tube is not that expensive directly from Toyota, we buy them pretty regularly for the 4Runner installs, usually 2-3 days out on new orders but if you do get in a bind I have one here you could use and replace.

Thanks for the info guys and I might be taking ya up on that inner fender tube. Called a salvage yard today in chula vista that said they had the stock airfilter box and intake tube (which is what I'm guessing I'll have to get to make the snorkel setup work).

You will need the stock 4Runner tube coming from the engine to the airbox. You will need the stock Tacoma tube that extends further into the quarter panel.

they quoted me the price of $150 for the stock intake setup (box and intake tube)...but I still need to get the inner fender tube for the tacoma, anyone know what year I should get? I guess that will also affect what year snorkel I get for a tacoma.

You only have on option on both accounts... the 96-04' Tacoma snorkel and intake tube. Safari makes one and only one snorkel for the Tacoma application and that is the one you need (SS170HF). This has a near identical profile to your 96-02' 4Runner fender and the install can be done very cleanly.
