I was curious if anyone here has tried to use a Detroit Auto Locker on the Monteros? Or have you all just used the Air Locker? Any thoughts? used on other rigs? ya know whatever.

There are only two Monteros that I know of with a Detroit. Lloyd on 4x4wire used one in a 90 Montero 2-door, drove that truck to death and sold it for bookoo $$ to a dude in Phoenix who doesn't drive it. Second, Brian (bs on the Wire) has one in his 89 4-door, but doesn't post anywhere very often.

All the other trucks on this run pulled a sky wheel here, his didn't. :(

Does the sheet metal change in the Montero from the 98-99 model years do anything or is it just for looks?

 WTH kind of question is that?

Oh what the hell I'll answer it anyway. It's just sheet metal, just dumb sheet metal, nothing more and nothing less.

Well to be perfectly honest I really didn't know if it gave more room for tires or was just to make it more appealing by giving the box some texture. I mean it could have been a functional design....

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Well I have Lloyds front detroit, he put an ARB in his old truck a few years before selling the truck to the guy who doesn't drive it. I must say the detroit is awesome. It is predictable when it engages and disengages, and it's quiet unlike other auto lockers. I still have a good turning circle like stock but i can't give it gas while trying to maneuver or it will lock and make it hard to steer until it gets out of the bind.

I didn't know there was a sheet metal change from 98-99. I am aware of the 97-98 change...
Now wouldn't it have been simpler to say "the change was from 97-98 model years" instead of that? Well maybe it's not as fun I guess.:smiley_drive:

Didn't someone talk about trying the Aussie Lokka which was supposed to become available for the Pajero on the 'wire?

I had my years wrong that is all. I have seen both designs when searching for 97 or 98. but it is google after all.

Also since model years typically come out in OCT of the previous year 98-99 would be correct to.

Hmm the idea of having control over when and how often your front diff is locked has never crossed my mind, but then again when I had my 4Runner I just went and played in the mud. not much rock.

I wouldn't consider a front locker unless you plan to play in areas that a non-locked rig won't work well such as the harder rock crawling trails (4 & 5 on a scale of 1-5 with one being the easiest trails). Otherwise the upgrade will be nothing more than bling since it will likely NEVER be used. Instead of asking a bazillion questions here you really should meet some of the local AZ Crew (what we call them on 4x4wire) and ask your questions to that group. They are very knowledgable especially when it comes to building the more extreme capable trail rigs.

But I love just asking a bunch of questions anonymously... No but really I am a stay at home Dad and really don't have much time to just sit around and BS, and I don't have a car right now, my Jetta needs a dist. and this is much easier than figuring out time to meet up.
