Some time through the Bay of Plenty, NZ

Hi all,

Now that Michelle and I live in New Zealand, as recent migrants from Idaho - USA, we spend most of our free time exploring the "Land of the Long White Cloud".

We consider ourselves blessed to be able to live here and have chosen Hamilton (New Zealand's largest inland city) on the North Island as our home. The relatively central location of Hamilton makes it a wonderful base from which to travel. We can be to the coasts, ski fields, and major lake districts in less than 2 hours.

It's funny, we continually have people tell us we have seen more of the North island than they have even though they've lived here their whole lives. Not bad for 3 months here eh?

Yesterday we decided to travel to the Northen part of the Bay of Plenty. This included the towns of Waihi, Whiritoa, Whangamata, Onemana, and others.

One very interesting aspect of living here is obviously the Maori culture. The country is steeped in Maori tradition and influence.

In the town of Waihi we visited a small park which includes a gold mine, pump house, statues, and more.

One amazing aspect is the relatively few amount of people we regularly see on the pristine beaches. We travelled north out of Waihi to Whiritoa (pronounced fear-e-TOH-uh) Beach for example, and we counted less than 10 people on the beach. Keep in mind it was 75F and a Saturday.

After leaving Whiritoa Beach

We continued to head north out of Whiritoa passing some great bits of coastline, lagoons, etc.

Keep in mind Christmas IS coming soon but as a Northen Hemisphere expat, it certainly doesn't feel like it.

In the town of Whangamata (fawn-guh-MAH-tuh) we stopped and ate some delicious Fish & Chips (fush-and-chups) :) while sitting at a beach head.

We walked around the local Marina for a while as we are in the market for a new boat and wanted to see some examples.

On to Onemana

After leaving Whangamata we continued on to Onemana (oh-neh-MAH-nuh) and entered a recreation area (managed by the logging companies I think). The recreation area is on the penninsula that is North of Whangamata and is relatively unihabited. Keep in mind there are farms on the penninsula and the animals have better views than many of us in the States :)

The area has a gravel road (they call em metal roads here) throught he penninsula with some beautiful native bush alolng the way.

It open up at the end to a small car park / picnic area with stunning views over Whangamata and the cove.

We enjoyed some lovely NZ wines (nice Chardonnay) and cheeses (Kapiti's Kikorangi blue) at the great little picnic area. Once finished we headed home.

Hope you liked the trip report. Not exactly a lot of offroad stuff, but and adventurous spirit is hopefully conveyed.

By the way, to see MUCH more from other trips, feel free to go visit us on facebook on the "Living Upside Down" page indicated in my signature.

Cheers all!
