my son has a 97 cherokee. 2dr. man. trans. 4.0 w/231 t/c. he was trying to sell it to finance a summer out west. of course the day someone was coming to look and probably buy it the chain (which we knew was noisy) in the t/c wore a hole in the case. the guy came and looked at it anyway and said he would still buy it if that t/c would work in his jeep (evidently he totalled his out and only really needs the body off ours) his is a same year,2dr but with a at trans. he called back and stated that it is not the same t/c between at and man trans. i think its probably different driveshafts only, dunno. a friend has a salvage yard with a 97 t/c off a at trans for a really good price. so... are they the same 231 t/c's?

I'm not 100% but i think the AT and MT trans still use the same length input gear.. so it should be a bolt on.

In the event i'm incorrect he could simply tear down the replacement transfercase and install the cracked ones input gear. Couple hours of work..

I've been going through a lot of this in the last little bit. I bought a wrecked 2000 XJ to sell for parts and have had a ton of people calling wanting the Tcase out of it.

There is a difference between the Manual and Auto input lengths however... The input gear on a 231 is super easy to change. If he has the skills to pull the one out of his wreck, he has the skills to simply swap the input from your worn case into the one out of his wreck. It's a matter of about 45 min of work if that.

He could trade his for a T-case out of a manual rig.

It depends on what transfer case the guy has with his auto. If he has the 'Command-trac' then he'll have a NVG 231-J like what your son has. If he has 'Select-Trac' then he has the NVG 242 -J transfer case. Select-Trac unlike Command-Trac allows for Full-time 4WD. The NVG 241 transfer case of the Select-Trac is slightly longer then the NVG 231 which may cause additional problems with drive shaft lengths. The AX-15 has the longest drivetrain length and uses the shortest drives hafts, IIRC. The Auto's are usually a few inches shorter (not sure about the AW4) so the drive shafts are slightly longer. So the best case scenario is if the other guy has a NVG 231 also. Otherwise, he might run into drive shaft length issues.

I think it would be easier if you bought a salvage 231 and either swap the input shaft or just swap the whole rear half. In both cases the transfer case would need to be split. Swapping the input shaft would be an extra step. NVG 231's for the most part are all interchangeable so you can mix and match parts till something works. Although, if he's just selling it then replacing the chain, sprockets and case would be the most I'd do.

** Although now that I think about it if the auto is a 32RH then it will be a 23 spline. The only auto to use 21 spline is the AW4.
