Sorry guys but I love long drives too much...

Let me first begin by saying that I love to take long roadtrips and seeing the country. Always have and I hope I always will be able to do so.

That said, I traded in my 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon for a 42 mpg Volkswagen Golf TDI. I've never owned a diesel before and I'm really enjoying the torque.

Hopefully someday Jeep will come out with a Wrangler TDI and perhaps I'll be pulled back in. In the meantime, I'll be on the road and making half as many fuel stops.

Be well and see you out there. :smiley_drive:

You will love the TDI Golf.

I'd actually like to replace my commuter car with a JK-U Rubi. The car is not very comfortable for long trips, but I've driven if from WA to New Mexico and back twice.

Love my 2010 Jetta TDI. I get 49 mpg on the highway and 42-43 close to home. Torque of the little diesel is great - it will go up Raton Pass (on the NM/CO border) at 65 mph without downshifting out of top gear.

I like to see the country too. I just like to see it from off road instead of the interstate. :victory:

Fuel prices are really putting a crimp in vehicle assisted adventure travel. If your vehicle gets 15 mpg, a 500 mile weekend costs $130. That's with gas at $4 a gallon. It costs more than that where I live.

Truth be told, most of us only need 4x4 and Jeeps a few times in a year. I know I NEEDed mine about 20 days of the year last year.

When you need a Jeep its important, but a TDI is a great vehicle. Congrats- see you soon.

We've owned a TDI for almost 5 years now. It's still an amazing vehicle but comparing it to or judging it against a 4x4 is simply like comparing apples and oranges.

I would never give one up for the other. I may limit using the 4x, or at worse case put off driving it until I could justify or afford the expense and possibly temporarily cancel the insurance.

As for those that are making payments on 2 vehicles, that's another story.

I bought my first Jeep, a CJ-2A, in 1965 and owned it for 30 years. Traded that for a '79 CJ-7 and kept that for 10 years. Sold it 6 years ago and bought a '94 XJ.

As you can tell by my last paragraph I'm not giving up 4-wheelin' anytime soon. :smiley_drive:

I guess it depends on what your "needs" are. I NEED to go off road to help maintain my sanity. I use 4x4 a lot more than a few times a year.

The Euro JK's get the 2.8l diesel and about 30mpg, rumor has it in 2012 they will have a diesel option for us, but that's been a rumor for a long time.

Raton Pass- the great humbler, I can do about 40, in second gear:smiley_drive:

Worse mileage was better than the best

I've owned a VW TDi since 2000. The worst mileage I ever got was 33 mpg and that was while doing top speed (It has a limiter at 127mpg) in the Nevada desert with the A/C on.

Of course, this was years ago now and I'm much wiser now and would never do something like this again. :ylsmoke:

It's the only vehicle I've ever owned that has so much torque, it can pull itself up our steep driveway in first gear at an idle.

I sure could have used even 1/2 this fuel economy in my Arizona Strip trip.

Thanks,
Fred

Congrats on your purchase! The TDIs are fun. Kinda wish I had one to commute to work in. What year did you get? I know the older Golfs (and related VWs) have 1 and 2 inch lift kits available for them. Should allow you to venture a bit further off pavement.

Here's where to get them.

Here's a New Beetle with the 2" kit playing in Moab.
