Source for Gen I front Diff Gears

Finally started playing around with my new 89' SWB and noticed the front wheels weren't engaging in 4 L. Suspected the hubs at first, but closer inspection revealed that the front driveshaft was turning, but the axles were not!! Pulled the front diff cover off and there was massive pile of metal shavings and chunks in there :Wow1:

This thing was so stripped out, that in 4wd, there isn't even any grinding sound at all.

So, I have a front diff that needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Unfortunately, none of the junkyards around me have anything like this, Montero's not being very common here in Eastern TN. I've tried in vain to find a source for gears to rebuild it, any ideas?

Thanks for the replies! It has the V-6, 5 speed. I believe the ratio is supposed to be 4.625 or something crazy like that, but I jacked up the rear and spun the tire and it only turns the axle 2.25 time for each revolution of the wheel. I know the gearing isn't that tall!

LOL, you'd have to spin the driveshaft and count the wheel revolutions; it is 4.625. Like is alluded to above, make sure you get a center axle section for a V-6 Montero or your half shafts won't work, if I recall correctly. And I'd buy the whole center section to keep from having to set up the gear backlash and pinion depth, etc. Paying the extra shipping would be worth it. Be prepared to replace the seal that may have been damaged on the driver's side when the old half shaft was removed.

There's a gen 1 v6 at the local yard. What's your price range? Row 52.com will hook you up with someone to pull it. It's at the picknpull yard in Oakland,Ca. My experience has been the pullers usually want $100-$150 to pull a front diff plus the part cost and shipping.m

If your pinion gear is ok, I have a ring gear and LSD with a matching half shaft that will drop in.
