Spare tire placement on trailer - On top of tongue or swing out on back?

I have seen both...any benefit to one over the other?

Random thoughts...

The front mount (on tongue, against trailer box) would increase tongue weight, but easier (less work) for me to do. I also plan on a storage box up front also. I assume you would just adjust your trailer load to compensate for the heavier weight up front? Would I need to adjust axle placement/tongue length if I went this route???

I had been planning on a swing out spare tire holder, but then using the trailer as a utility trailer would be more of a pain.

I am leaning towards a front mount...thoughts?

I put mine on a swingout. I was surprised and how much it affected the balance and I needed to alter how I had the items set up at the front of the trailer to get the correct tongue weight. I personally really like having the swingout but that's because it made sense for my trailer. It may not make sense for yours and if that's the case, having it mounted up front would probably be better.

Thanks Adam,

I like the swing out idea, but if I wanted to get some plywood or something along those lines, it would not work well. Not sure what I'm going to do!

I've used your thread as a reference, appreciate you posting your build.

I got a spacer to go from rig bolt pattern to trailer bolt pattern, and will use rig spare if it is needed. I will repair tire first before going to the next step.
My 2 cents

My lug pattern and tire size will match also. 1 spare for the trailer and truck...with my luck, not sure if that is a good idea! :sombrero:
something to consider though, thanks!

If you have the room underneath get a spare tire winch from a Toyota P/U and mount it somewhere under the trailer as close as you can to the center without interfering with the axle. That was it doesn't effect the tongue weight at all and it lowers the trailers center of gravity.

:sombrero: I mounted mine on ajeep spare tire carrier on the back wall of the trailer and resting on the bumper--

much less tongue weight and couner weight for stability-

Trailer essentially done 027.JPG

I did something very similar. I attached a Jeep TJ spare tire carrier to the back of my trailer, and extended the rear 2" receiver enough so the tire rested on the receiver hitch. With a cooler on a tray in front of the tub along with a Kolpin 4 gallon fuel cell attached to the front side of the tub (and two 2.5 gallon Jerry cans mounted in front of the axle), I'm not worried about having enough tongue weight.

And you're smart to be carrying a trailer spare on the trailer itself.

:sombrero: Yeah, actually- I have 8 tires that all fit on my jeep/same size (305/70x17)-KM2's-

I like this idea, but I think the tire will eat up all my clearance (33" tires, 12-13" wide).
